The doctor said to start rice cereal at four months. I use dr browns and I'm sure they wont work with how thick the formual will be. So I'm wondering which bottles?
Back when I had my oldest son using cereal in the bottle was normal and not such the controversial thing it is now. We used playtex nursers and enlarged the hole in the nipple ourselves. For my other 2 I spoon fed them the cereal.

The fact that you had to alter the nipple yourself didn't tell you something? Seriously?

Why does people using cereal bother you so much?
It really doesn't, but ffs, at least do it properly. It's really not that hard to do a little research, really. It annoys me when people blindly follow their pedis without doing ANY research of their own.
If you're ready to do this, you should consider your options. My one friend said her doctor said not to start this until 6 months and another friend's doctor told her it was fine to start with rice or oatmeal at 4 months. I'm not there yet with my daughter but this is what my friend told me she's doing. She made the mix and added more milk than it called for so it was pretty much soupy so baby wouldn't reject it. I think her idea was as baby got more comfortable with eating then they would thicken it.i don't know if she uses the bottle still, I think she might be spoon-feeding her daughter.
Everyone has their own opinions, you just have to decide what's best for you and your baby. I don't have a lot of advice to offer since I'm not there yet but I hope this helps at least to know what others are doing.
We didn't do the bottle rice cereal. With DD we actually started at 4 mos doing spoon feeding of soupy cereal and then made it with less milk to make it thicker to get used to solids.
Pedi with DD actually suggested it at any time after 2 months. But we waited until 4.
You just have to do what works for you. You don't HAVE to do the rice cereal if you don't want to. We really only did to start and then went to solids new one every week starting at about 5 mos. maybe flamefull especially on TB but it worked for us.

MrsNorry I think you would save yourself a lot of stress if you would just let it go haha.
OP ask your pedi what bottles they think you should use. see what they say.
The rice cereal debate is exhausting. We need a new topic to get our panties in a wad about.
It seriously does not stress me. People wanna go around being uneducated idiots about their kids' health? Go for it! I personally will always do my own research in conjunction with my pediatrician's advice. I was under the impression that it was well known that putting rice cereal in a baby's bottle was no longer advised as it is a choking hazard. But, by all means, blindly do what your parents did. Because that never went badly.
I am tired of reading about this topic as well. It is hard to know what to do though when your pedi tells you one thing and you do your own research and it says another, so I can at least sympathize! I fought my pedi, speech therapist, and nurse practitioner hard when they wanted me to add rice to my LOs bottles at 3 weeks due to a swallow study result of penetration/aspiration and reflux. I was way too nervous to do it, but after his 2 month appointment and him being miserable eating, I had to give in. He is happier eating, but FYI for those of you just doing it to do it and/or doing it so they will "sleep longer" that is a myth! It does not make him sleep any longer at all! And, I am very cautious when feeding him it still scares me a little. Hopefully we can wean off it in the bottle soon.

Ditto Mrs Norry 100.
But, people are stupid...soooo just go ahead and poke holes in your bottles and hope your kiddo doesn't choke, I guess?
I am not sure if you are calling ME stupid but its a little uncalled for. Giving my son cereal in a bottle was done 17 years ago and is what worked for us. My other two kids had cereal spoon fed to them as I felt it was better then in a bottle. Not because someone called me stupid or uneducated. I plan on spoon feeding my daughter cereal as well. I am not sure why people get attacked on this board. Isn't that what this board is about? Asking opinions and what works for some and not others?

I'm not calling you stupid. And I'm sure you have common sense and realize that just because something was common 17 years ago, it might not be the best way to do it now.
Heck, even 3 years ago it was very common for carseats to be flipped to forward facing right at 12 months of age. This has obviously changed since then. But it wouldn't be smart to say "well I turned my other child around on her first birthday so I'm going to do the same this time around!" and just ignore the current recommendations.
Yeah, I agree its uncalled for and I would ignore them. Btw like I said I plan on spoon feeding cereal too and really don't care what others think. This board should be about sharing opinions and ideas like you said.

oh FFS. okay, OP, Yes i put rice cereal in my baby's bottles. the who, what, why, how's are my business and my pediatrician's business. and yes i do trust my pediatrician more than Dr. Google. YOU, need to figure out the same for yourself. Personally i don't solicit advice from other moms because for every one mom telling you it's horrible, there are two telling you it's fine.
In real life, this is seriously not as big a deal as people on the bump make it out to be. I feel like this is a new way to perpetuate mommy wars.
THIS. Do what is best for you and your baby!

FFS people! If you don't trust your pediatrician then get a new one, but don't rely on doctor google, that's almost as dumb as not taking your child to the pediatrician at all.
fwiw op, do as you wish, your kid, your call. I wouldn't give rice cereal for choking concerns, and I would voice that to my doctor, other than that, either trust your doctor's judgement or get a new one. Don't expect to get an accurate response on a message board.

I think it's important to remember that in ten, fifteen or twenty years, we'll look like morons for our parenting choices based on the current research. That's the nature of the beast. We do the best we can now with the information we're given. I hate that someone looking for advice was given anything other than positivity. We're all doing the best we can and the fact that she reached out for advice is a lot more than many people would do. Just my two cents...

...my baby has tummy prombles and the doc said this would be best
Here's the crux of it all IMO. Do you trust your pedi? Do you feel comfortable with his assessment of the situation? Then by all means, give your baby cereal. Every baby is different, and every pedi is different. Just be sure to follow pedi's directions to a T, otherwise you might do more harm than good.
That being said, this is probably not the best board to be asking this question. As you can tell, it's a bit of a touchy subject. LOL Also, I know Born Free has special Y shaped nipples (sold individually, not as part of a bottle set) for cereal.
After 7 years of no ovulation... BFP#1 10/24/11 ~ EDD 6/29/12 ~ Natural m/c 11/2/11 BFP#2 2/3/12 ~ Alice born 9/26/12
My baby went to a specialist and this is what he said to do. I do plan on spooning feeding her but not til I see how the cereal work for her in the bottle first

Then there you go. Although, frankly, I personally would start with spoon feeding so you don't have to worry about specific bottles. JMO.

This, and Dr Brown's has Y cut nipples for cereal too. I never used cereal in a bottle, but we used them for a faster flow when we were having trouble weaning DS1 off the bottle.

This. 100x this. I tend to do my research, talk to my pedi, then make my own decision. I started giving my oldest son rice cereal from a spoon at around 2 months. He had terrible reflux and just wasn't getting enough to eat. It worked for us. My daughter didn't need anything more than breastmilk so she didn't get cereal until the recommended time (actually a few months after that, I think). With this LO, we'll make our own informed decision based upon his needs. That's really all you can do as a parent. Like wonderwallflwr said, in 20 years, all our kids will shake their heads when we tell them the things we did.
The opinions on here drive me nuts... do what your pedi and YOU think works best for YOUR baby. Don't worry about what an internet stranger has to say about your parenting. Just because 10 out of 1,000 people are not going to give their baby cereal doesn't mean that cereal isn't going to work for YOU and YOUR baby.
