April 2013 Moms

RCS

Question:  Anyone have an emergency c-section with #1, and then had a routine c/s for #2?  If so, was your recovery better, experience better, etc?

I'm trying to calm my nerves, as my first emerg c/s was a nightmare, the recovery was horrible.  A rcs is recommended, however, it's giving me anxiety.

I was told the bad experience was because they cut me while contracting, etc. after 12hrs of hard labour and 3hrs of pushing...and that a routine c/s is a walk in the park!

Re: RCS

  • I'm there with ya. I had an emergency c-section for DD because she was in distress. The whole experience was horrible, and the immediate recovery period was pretty darn bad, too. We just scheduled my RCS for April 17 and I'm hoping it goes a lot smoother than what I went through with DD!

  • I had an emergency c/s with my daughter. I am actually planning to attempt VBAC but my chances are only around 50% so I will probably end up with a RCS. I am totally OK with that - just want the chance to try.

I have heard the same thing as you - that the recovery between RCS and ECS are TOTALLY different. I had a HORRIBLE experience  I had to be sedated on the table because I started freaking out (after being awake for over 30 hours, 18 hours of labor, 10 hours active labor and 2.5 hours of pushing, I wasn't quite myself.) and I had to be knocked out and restrained. I didn't see my daughter until she was 2-3 hours old. That is my biggest fear about the RCS - but they assure me that it is not going to go down like that again. It will be very relaxed and that they go out of their way to make it more relaxing. There will be none of the urgency or fear of the ECS and I will take it much better.

  • Mine was also because DD was in distress (heart rate was through the roof!).  They want to schedule me for 39wks, and I have a lot of anxiety about it.

  • The four friends I've talked to that had emergency c-sections the first time, followed by a scheduled c-section the 2nd time have ALL said, unanimously, that the 2nd time around is MUCH MUCH better. In terms of the actual surgery, the recovery, everything. I've yet to hear a story about how the scheduled c-section is worse, so hopefully that makes you feel better :)

I'm considering the same thing, and talking about our options on Thursday with my OB. But if we determine in our situation that a RCS is best, I'm fine with it, after talking with my friends. They said it was VERY different than their original surgery.

  • I'll likely be getting a RCS, too, sometime around 39w/5d. I'm going to schedule as late as possible in hopes I go in on my own since I'd like a VBAC, but am not adamant about it. I've also heard that scheduled c/s are usually an easier recovery. I was in labor for about 15 hours and had pushed 2 hours before they did my c-section because of heart rate so I'm hoping that not having that exhaustion from the labor will help to make it somewhat easier. I've heard from friends that had schedule c-sections that it was not too bad. Crossing fingers on that!

  • Thank you all.  This calms my anxiety (a little).  Like others, my ECS experience was brutal.

I asked the Dr. about VBAC as this baby is measuring much smaller than my first, he said I can do what I want, but RCS is best.

My husband is really pushing for the RCS, he keeps trying to calm my nerves, and telling me how much better it will be...I won't be up for 18hrs before being admitted, then awake ALL NIGHT labouring, then pushing for 3hrs, ECS, then up for the next week! LOL  He keeps telling me how rested I can be this time around (I think my anxiety will keep me awake though...it is now!)
