Toddlers: 24 Months+

Crib climber! now what

We've been having issues putting DD to sleep, she wants us to sit with her, we are transitioning to sitting in our bedroom with door open.  Tonight she climbed out of the crib 3 times so i think it's time to convert it to a toddler bed.

Now what? Any advice is appreciate it.  How do i get her to stay in there, get a lock on the door to lock her screaming in her room? Supernanny style? Help!

  • We had the same problem with one and then the other one joined in with him climbing out! I thought it would be so tough to transition but honestly it wasn't bad at all. The first night they were jumping on their beds when they got in but then they settled down and fell asleep. We have been having issues with them sleeping through the night even before they went into their beds (since around November). It has actually been a bit better since they are in their beds but not great:(  I do still have to sit in there with them until they fall asleep.  They know if they get out of bed I will leave so they stay in the beds until they fall asleep. We put a gate on their door so they can't get out at night.  Good Luck!

  • If you need something secure to ensure she stays in her room for safety reasons during the night, check out "door monkey" on Amazon. Best $10 we have spent towards any sort of safety device. I have a cross between a ninja, Chuck Norris, and Houdini and it actually keeps my toddler in his room.

  • PS, I didn't address the whole 'how to transition' part. For us, it was actually easy and he liked his new floor bed. I hope you guys have an easy transition!

  • DD1 started climbing out of her crib at 21 months at nap and bedtime.  We transitioned to a toddler bed with no issues.  She just really didn't want to be confined in the crib anymore.

We set up her toddler bed and let her explore it and we read books on it.  We did our normal bedtime routine and she went to bed just fine.  We didn't do anything to confine her to her room.  About 6 months after the transition she had some sleep regression/bedtime phobia.  We tried a baby gate at her door (she climbed over) and a knob cover (she figured it out in about 5 minutes).  We ended up doing something similar to the Sleep Lady Shuffle.

    Good luck!

  • Time for a bed. And yes, Supernanny style worked for us. Get a gate, be consistant (yes, sticking them back in bed 50 times or more a night sucks, it'll stop I promise). And good luck.

  • We have DD in a crib tent.  I know they were recalled.  We put her in it before that.  I would not do anything differently.  She wasn't ready for a bed then no matter what anyone says.  NOT that some kids aren't ready.  I have heard great success stories from friends and family about kids as young as 22 months transitioning to a toddler bed or a mattress on the floor.

  • We put the toddler rail on DD's crib and a gate at her door when she was just shy of her 2nd birthday. It took a week of getting up 3 times/night, and another week of getting up 1-2 times/night, but after that, she has done really well. Nap time is another story. She is a total nap fighter, so I actually have to sit in her room with her as she falls asleep to ensure that she stays in her bed instead of playing. It doesn't bother me (yet), as it makes me take some time to sit down and rest. I will also add that she could probably climb over the gate, but she wears a sleepsack when she sleeps, so that has kept her in her room.

  • After three nights we had to go out and get a gate for her door.

I felt bad about it at first because she was upset but at some point I realized that if I feel bad about the gate at the door then I should feel bad about having her in a crib the first two years. They are really both doing the same thing.

It was the first time we had to let her cry it out. It was sad but after three or four nights she would just happily go to bed after our bedtime routine.

I vote see how it goes but have a gate as your back up plan. Some kids just stay in bed.
