Health Insurance Vent!

So I made one appointment for the midwife on the 16th (tomorrow) and another for an ultrasound on the 1st. When making the appointment they asked for all of my health insurance info and they said they would give it to billing. Now, as soon as I found out I was pregnant I made sure my husband got me health insurance (it's through his work) and we have been paying since January 1st.

I got a call after saying that I am not under the insurance and I will be paying $1,600 at the appointment if I don't get it figured out. So for days we have been trying to figure out why I'm not under his insurance since we just payed an arm and a leg for it at the beginning of the month. All day I've been on the phone trying to figure things out and I'm so aggravated.

Harvard Pilgrim (where the insurance is from) told me that I need to contact his employer. Uhh.. you're providing the insurance? Why can't YOU figure it out? I feel like I'm not going to be able to have my appointment tomorrow which would be so disappointing. The reason why I'm so mad is because I'm paying for it, so I should be able to use it!!!

Thanks for letting me vent :)

  • Sometimes it takes a while for the insurance company to get the uploaded info from the employer. Have your husband talk to his HR department.  Good luck!!

Agreed. Plus it's not something they can call your husband's HR about. He has to get with his HR.

  • I would have your husband talk to his HR department and have the HR person contact their person at the insurance company.  It seems like by Jan 15th they should have everything updated in their system, but it could have been missed somehow. Good luck!

  • When you say you had him add you as soon as you found out you were pregnant - was it during his open enrollment when he could add people? If not I don't believe you can add a dependent without a qualifying life event (marriage, loss of other coverage, death, birth, etc). Maybe that's why you aren't showing as covered?

  • I am sorry. I hate dealing with insurance companies. It took awhile for me to show up on DH's insurance but they told me that I was OK and that anything done would be retro-active. Your situation sounds a little different...almost like maybe the HR at your DH's work did not do their part. I would definitely check with them.

We just got married so he could add me. He's been talking to the HR person about it the whole time and they keep saying that it should be working. Who knows...

Ok, so you did have a qualifying event where you could be added.  Hopefully the insurance company is just slacking and hasn't updated their system yet.

  • When I started my new job, I asked HR when I could start having H use his insurance.  They said immediately, that even though we didn't have our cards yet, we were signed up and ensured and that it was in place so just go about our business and everything will get worked out.  I wouldn't stress, it sounds like your covered.  Did you get an insurance card for yourself?  If you haven't it may still be processing.
