Parenting after a Loss

Donating Milk?

I have been blessed with being able to produce alot of milk. DS is about 8 weeks and eating about 24 ounces a day. Each day I pump around 4050 ounces. Needless to say my freezer is FULL. I have about 600 ounces saved. I don't want to be quick to get rid of it just incase but I also wanted to look Into donating it? Has anyone done it? What was your experience? I am hoping to pump for a year.

  • You wouldn't happen to be in the Portsmouth, NH area, would you?  There is story circulating of a need there.

I donated mine through a local milk bank (san jose milk bank).  I only had like 50 oz, but they were interested (they usually require 100 oz).  It was a process to donate.  Paperwork and questions, even some labs were done.  It was worth it though, so much better than throwing it out since my son wouldn't drink it (excess lipase).

  • I don't know, but I wanted to post to say thank you. Until my milk came in my boys received donor milk. I am so incredibly thankful they got that extra protection in those critical early days. Anyone who donates gets my gratitude!

  • I am in Houston. I am going to check the local Children's Hospital too! I wish I had people to give it too. Especially the women who want it. For me ill keep pumping like a crazy woman if I can not only give my son the best but help other Mom's. My mom had enough for 3 kids and I am blessed too. Oh how I wish it would last longer than 46 months

  • I'm jealous! I wish I had a surplus! I would check online. I'm in CA and was looking into it in case I have any left over at the end of the year. The closest place I found was a couple of hours away at the San Jose milk bank, I think junebug mentioned. I'm afraid I won't have leftovers ;] I just hope I can pump enough for the short time I am working...

  • There is a girl from thebump who had a micropreemie last week near Houston whose daughter is/was recieving donated breast milk, so I know they are accepting donations in your area.  She is at the local Children's hospital so I would check there.  You actually probaby know they mom I am referring to- jbrandon.  She is a loss mom (lost her first at 31 weeks) and was on Pgal (she was 26w3d)...

I donated to a hospital milk bank that worked with a company that made human milk fortifier for NICU babies usually cow formula is used.nbsp; I did not feel comfortable donating to another mother b/c people are so suehappy I was afraid they would blame me if something went wrong with their baby.nbsp; The hospital bank took blood samples, reviewed my lifestyle and had me exclude milk on days that I used OTC meds even Tylenol wasn't accepted.nbsp; I decided to donate my surplus instead of hoarding it after I lost 1000 ounces to lipase and a power outage.nbsp; The milk bank could use my milk and I had a surplus while EPing.nbsp; Over 4 months I donated 1300 ounces. I was able to continue EPing for my DD until she was 13m and I was KU with 2.nbsp; I fed her and now my son all BM without having a huge freezer stash I keep maybe 30oz.It is a great gift to give a sick baby their tummies aren't able to digest cow milk proteins as well, so having human milk is just better for them when they are in a fragile state.nbsp; Yes the company or hospital probably charged families lots of money to use the product BUT it was available and those babies needed human milk products and it wasn't free for the hospital/company to make there was in investment in testing me and then treating/processing the milk into a useable concentrated milk fortifier.

This is what I might do as well. Very true on people being sue happy. Even when your trying to help

  • I know she has posted on the preemie board and has updated on the loss board.  I'm not sure if she has been on Pgal.  I also know she is pumping and waiting for her milk to come in, so I don't know if she would personally need milk, but thought you could try the hospital!  Good luck.  I actually thought about donating milk after my loss, but it was too difficult for me to try pumping after losing Annabelle.  I think it's such a wonderful thing to do.

Yeah Jackson has an appointment at the children's hospital next week so I'm going to talk to them. That's what I had originally planned. I know preemies really can benefit from it.

I think everyone understands how hard it would be to pump after your loss.

I'm not sure if I've told you how much I love miles name. If we had gone with Maxximus as the name it was going to be Maxximus Ivan
