Baby shoes?

What are the best shoes for DD now that she's learning to stand? I want her to have something that will give her good traction and support during this special time... I know she'll grow out of themm quickly. But that's not a concerning factor atm since she's just now learning to practice standing.

Re: Baby shoes?

  • It is best if they practice barefoot.

I only put shoes on when we go out, and it happens to be really cold (and only because my son loves to remove his socks within a minute of it being on his feet).

Where did you get this information? Why is it best for a baby to learn barefoot, as I have yet to hear this and heard a 180? I live in sunny s.fl so cold weather isn't much of an issue. It's for traction, support as she has a fairly high arch.

Btw did you have a suggestion for shoes? Thx!
  • my DS feet and ankles are so chunky I can not get any on him!

  • I can't remember where it was, but I've also read that barefoot is best. That's why Robeez and Skidders type shoes are so popular -- they are second best to bare feet.

  • According to our pedi and physical therapist barefoot is best.  If you need shoes now soft soled shoes like Robeez or Stride rite are a good start.  If you have a StrideRite store, or Nordstroms, they can measure your baby's foot and help you pick an appropriate shoe for her/his stage.

  • Yep, barefoot is best. I have DS barefoot as much as possible. They need to feel the floor, use their toes, etc. Trust me, your LO will get plenty of traction with bare feet. I pull DS's socks off as soon as we get anywhere he'll be playing. We have soft soled boots like Robeez just for warmth, not for standing or wearing for any length of time. He only really wears them in the carseat or stroller and as soon as he comes out, the boots come off.

  • Our pedi and the American Academy of Pediatrics book that my pedi gave us states that bare foot is best.  As for the shoe I use when it is cold outside, it is Robeez.  The pediped for babies is good too.
  • Thanks for clarification and detailed responses. I use carters socks with shoe deisgns typically when we go out. Just recently she's pulling up and getting better. But she slipped a few times while barefoot, luckily I caught her. Which led me to wanting shoes for her, something with more traction while she practices standing.

Is there a product for babies that is soft like a sock but decent sole with traction?
  • Babies learn to stand and walk by first gripping with their toes.  Leave her barefoot, she'll start to get better at standing/walking with time.

Cool! How do you think they'd work with slick laminate wood floor as a factor? I get what others are saying about bare feet. But she really needs something to assist with grip until she's more efficiently mobile. It's even slippery for me to walk on barefoot. Thus my reasoning for her to have a short period of grip assistance.

What everyone is telling you, that has already been through this, is that no, she doesn't need more traction or a shoe or anything. Babies don't need shoes until they are walking very well. DD didn't start wearing shoes regularly until 14 months and she still only wears soft-soles.

We have all hard wood floors and she's fine. They fall, that is part of learning to stand and walk. I would not worry about it so much and let her figure it out. Bare feet are less slippery than socks usually.

I read a few articles myself. Makes sense. However, personally, I want her to practice in shoes a little bit daily. Just what I feel is best. As laminate is more slippery vs solid wood. Real wood has good traction, our floor however does not... though I do appreciate the good intended advice everyone's offered. I know she'll fall, just want to help her avoid :

  • we only wear shoes outside (we live in MN) and we use Pediped brand. I really like them, they are soft and grippy onthe bottom and stylish for my little boy. We just wear grippy socks around the house.

My son honestly did not walk until a couple of months after he turned 1 years old.  My daughter is not even close.  She just started to sit up and sometimes she just lays there like a turtle (and we prop her with pillows).  Both are preemies.  It really is not something that you should really push.  They will get there on their own.  Believe me, when they start to walk, they are more prone to accidents.  You really have to watch them.  I remember going to the toddler room when my son was 1 years old, and there were all of these 1 year old toddlers that had bruises on their face.  It is just part of learning.  And we did not need a helmet as well.  He had to learn himself to balance himself and to walk on his own.  My son is now like 90 miles an hour, so he has definitely caught up.

  • Our floors are very cold so we always have socks on LO and they have grippers on the bottom. Have you tried those. His feet are too fat for any shoes anyway.

  • Robeez are awesome.

  • Agree with ppers.  We use any of the soft leather shoes if she's going to be walking in a dirty place.  Robeez, See Kai Run, and Pediped all have varieties.  But, for home and daycare, she's just wearing socks (if she'll keep them on).

  • Robeez and stride rite are great. You really only need shoes for when they start walking around outside though.

No kidding? o.O Well, my kid isn't your kid and I would never push DD to walk. You can't push a baby to stand, that's a crazy thought, lol! She's doing it on her own, her own time her own way. She's well ahead of the curb per her pediatrician. While I could be an idiot and go with trends, I'm taking preemptive measures to help aid her while she is Learning. Her feet won't grow crooked from being in shoes a few minutes out of the day. You women, no offense, really get pushy with your opinions to a point it's rude. Quit trying to tell ppl how to parent, it's insulting.
