Re: Social assistance

  • I think your best bet is to visit your local social services office in-person.

Bring your most recent pay statement, or W-2 (2012 tax form if you've received it), copies of your monthly bills, and transcript if you're a student to show proof that you are enrolled.

It's like the DMV - you're not going to get a clear answer based on your own experience unless you are sitting across from someone and they have a clear picture of your situation.

Also try going to your state's website or city's website.  You might be able to find some answers, forms to fill out in advance, or links to health programs which might be available to you.

What state are you in?  Maybe one of us can help point you in the right direction.

But really, I think you need to take some time to visit the office and actually speak to someone face to face.

WIC is also a great program which is available in most states.  They can provide assistance with food and baby supplies.

  • Sounds like you may be Canadian? Since you refer to "enough hours and ei". Either way, I agree with PP you need to go down to your local office, whatever that is, ASAP and talk to them. Just about all government employees are useless over the phone for anything other than generic questions. Be prepared to spend the day there and take snacks, but youll get what you need because they have to deal with you in person. This is not the right place for the detailed info you need.

Also be prepared to have the father's info ready. They will most likely require you establish paternity and file for child support if he can pay any once the baby comes in order to continue getting benefits. For now you are good with getting assistance for yourself as a mother to be.
