How common is nausea?

After a c/s how common is it to get really nauseous? This had not occurred to me until I saw it mentioned once. How many of you ladies experienced nausea and if so when before/during or after the surgery?

Re: How common is nausea?

  • I was only nauseous during the surgery for a few seconds. As soon as I mentioned it to the anesthesiologist, he fixed it.

  • I told the anesthesiologist I was worried about nausea and he had some sort of drug on hand. As soon I as felt it coming, he injected it into my IV and I was golden. No nausea after. Whatever that drug was, it's amazing.
  • I was extremely nauseous and had a bad headache. I didn't vomit and it was gone by the next morning.

  • I got pretty nauseous as they were wheeling me out of the OR- it turns out that the anesthesiologist added some pain meds to my IV as they were finishing up, and those usually make me nauseous.  I was ok in recover (1-2 hrs), but then ended up puking when we got transferred to my room.  As soon as the meds were out of my system (6+ hours), I felt a lot better.

Next time, I'm planning to ask them to give me the anti-nausea drug when they give the pain meds!

  • Thanks for the responses ladies :) I'll definitely let my anastegeoloigst know so he can be prepared in case I should start to feel sick.

Pretty much this, except I starting vomiting in recovery, and finally stopped 4-5 hrs later.  The good news, I couldn't feel anything so it didn't hurt, just felt awful until they could give me more anit-nauesea meds.

  • I was very ill for 12 hours after my c section, ill enough that I was barely conscious and couldn't hold my daughter. My OB this time is aware that that happened so if I don't have a second successful VBAC we will hopefully avoid the nastiness I had after my first. I'll be honest and say that it was the primary reason I fought so hard for a VBAC and am terrified to have another c section.

  • I don't seem to be ask lucky as some other ladies who posted here...  I was incredibly naseaus as soon as my son was delivered and the placenta removed.  I told the anestheologist 3x before he got me a bucket to throw up In.  Needless to say while my husband was playing with my son I was busy throwing up all over my self.  The anesthesiologist missed my mouth twice and rubbed the puke up my face....  Awesome...

I also got sick after recovery...  I had drank a big glass of cranberry juice.

  • I threw up a ton during labor, and once during my c-section. They jacked up my epidural though, so I blame it on that. They gave me zofran, which did help.

  • Yeah, the anesthesiologist should have a nausea medicine on hand to administer through the IV. I got sick during the section and the medicine admisitered didnt help. I actually got sick and passed out and didnt get to hold my son. I only remember briefly seeing the nurse standing there with him before I lost it.

That being said, I hadnt eaten anything but ice chips and a ice pop for 16 hours and I was very anemic so I lost a ton of blood. After I came too and was taken to my room I was weak but the nausea was gone.

This.  I loved the anesthesiologist I had; he was an older gentleman, had just gotten a smart phone and I "helped" him learn how to use it (I suspect he was just keeping me entertained more that he needed help) and we watched YouTube videos.

  • I was very nauseous after the surgery. They kept giving me shots to try and help but it didn't. I had my c section around 5:30pm Sunday and I wasn't able to eat anything until Tuesday morning. It was horrible :(

  • I was nauseous during surgery (it took me every effort to mention it without throwing up) and for the first day for both. Post surgery it was not debilitating--I did throw up a couple times that first day.

After I slept all was good.

  • DD....she was born @ 745am.  Got back to my room and was hungry.  Ate breakfast and got sick.  Felt better almost immediately.  Got hungry again.  Ate lunch and got sick.  Felt better almost immediately.  Finally kept dinner down and was fine.

DS....he was born @ 1237pm.  Didn't even make it out of recovery and was puking. The nurse put some zofran in my IV bag.   I *think* I got sick after dinner too but I don't remember.

My first c/section w/ my loss was under general anesthesia and I had zero nausea so I'm pretty sure it was 100% related to the spinal.

  • I was going to say I didn't have nausea, but come to think of it, after recovery when I was on the ward I remember thinking "I need to get some fresh air", so I was mildly nauseous but only for a short while.

I had strong nausea and bouts of vomiting for almost 24 hrs after my surgery, starting when they wheeled me to my room.  It had something to do with the anesthesia they gave me, and they were trying to pump anti-vomiting-ease-the-stomach meds into me but nothing worked.  What finally did the trick? Benedryl.  Its felt like the worst motion sickness of my life and 20min after the Benedryl I was a new woman.  Ask for that one first ;)

Whens your c/s again?  Is your ticker correct?  I'm so excited for you Ellis!

Thanks for all your responses ladies!

MM: I will definitely keep the benedryl in mind :) my c/s is scheduled for 1/17@noon. Only 6 days!! So crazy this will be our "last" weekend without a baby. I can't wait to meet him! Btw Lillian is s freakin cute, I just love seeing her pictures and updates :)

  • Not sure how common, but happened to me!  I was verrrry nauseous after the surgery. And continued to be for several hours after delivery, when all of my 'guests' were arriving - awesome.

Don't worry though, you will be too worried about 'covering up' and on a natural high from this beautiful little new person, and experiencing so much, you'll probably just get sick and move on with things - it'll be the least of your concern.  Not pleasant, but it is what it is.  Ice chips helped a LOT, so I'd just munch away, and ask everyone to please leave the room if I was feeling to ickey.

DH just reminded me yesterday in fact (we are pregnant with our second baby), "This time, don't throw up when my brother comes into the room, okay?" haha oops :) at least we can laugh about it now.

  • 1st C/S I did get nauseous and threw up on the operating table.  As bad as it sounds, it wasn't that bad.  The anethesiologist had a bucket ready and it only happened once. This was an emergency c/s at 32 weeks so my stomach was not empty so that could have been why.

2nd c/s. I told the anethesiologist as soon as I felt ill and he gave me some medicine.  He did say my blood pressure was really low so that could have been why.

3rd c/s.  Felt fine during the surgery but did throw up a few days later.

Same here. The anesthesiologist told me to let him know if I got nauseous, I did and he fixed it within 30 seconds when I mentioned it.

  • I vomitted during the entire procedure - it was miserable. The nurse anesthetist was wonderful and eventually got it to stop. I think it was more stress-related than med-related.

I had vomitted a number of times during labor (not sure if it was before or after I had pain meds). I still can't eat graham crackers or strawberry jello or drink ginger ale to this day. (That's what the midwives gave me to snack on at the hospital in the early hours of labor, so that's what came up.)

Afterwards, I was fine. I remember that the first meal they gave me was spaghetti, so I was really skeptical of eating that (because spaghetti vomit is nasty), but I don't remember having issues. (I also don't remember if I ate it Wink) I don't think I threw up at all after the procedure.

  • I was super nauseous during my section. Enough that they had to put a bed pan next to my head :/. I didn't puke though!

  • I tend not to handle general anesthesia well.  For my c-section, I started vomiting shortly after I received the spinal block.  Then I felt OK until about 3 hours post-op.  I started vomiting again, which I think was caused by the morphine drip.  Once that was stopped, I felt OK again.

  • I had none.

I did have it while laboring, it was awful. But, in the OR  I had none. A few hours after delivery I was starving, having been in labor for over 24 hours with nothing to eat. I had water and two Clif bars and had no nausea.

  • Before, during, and after. I threw up through all 36 hours of labor, through the surgery (which was INSANELY WEIRD feeling), and then for over a week after, mind you I have a bowel obstruction and ended up in the hospital with an ng tube to stop the vomitting.
