December 2012 Moms

My little man is FULL!

I've been having to supplement since a week after giving birth. My LO was a big boy, 10 lbs 5 oz, and went down to 8 lbs 9 oz due to having a bad latch and my milk supply being low. He is now back (and over) his birth weight but we are still dealing with the same issues.

Well, as I unlatched him, I laid him down to get the supplement supplies and I noticed complete silence. What!?!?! Normally he's screaming for more food! I look back and he's just laying there, very calm and content. Again.. what!?!?! I start testing his hunger cues to see if he's still hungry. Nope. Did I really just BF my baby successfully!? I am so proud of him.. and myself!

I am sooo happy! I even videoed myself testing for hunger cues on LO to send to my SO. It might not seem like a big deal to most, but it's quite the accomplishment for my little family. A sweet reminder to myself on why I haven't given up on BFing just yet!

Thank you for listening and feel free to share any AW moments of your LO!

  • Congrats! I too am having to supplement. My LO is never full after breast feeding and I pump but I can never get enough. Did you do anything special to up your supply? I'm so excited for you! This gives me hope that LO and I will find a balance too :-)

    POWER PUMPING.
10 minutes of pumping, 10 minute break. Repeat for 1 hour.

I've been taking herbal supplements and mothers milk tea for a while but just started power pumping a few days ago. Not only do I get more from power pumping, about 2 or 3 oz compared to 1 oz from a regular pumping sesh, but nursing is going better!

I hope it works for you too!

  • Good for you!!!!! That is so great and I totally understand. We are having so many issues too. I'm on mobile so can't see a siggy. How old is your baby? Mine is one month today. We've Ben supplementing too since week 2 because of supply and latch issues. I cannot get a good latch and once she's on she falls asleep. Plus my supply was/is low. I tried fenugreek but it didn't work. Now I'm taking domperidone and still pumping. Ill have to try the power pumping. My LC said to pump 8 times a day. Yeah because that's possible with an infant that needs to eat every 2 hours, takes an hour to eat at the breast and then needs a supplement from bottle...she said to try 4 times a day.
Anyway I'd love to hear how old he is so I know if there is any hope for us lol
I've always wanted to bf and never thought I'd have this many issues. Breaks my heart.

I swear we have the same baby! LO loves to comfort nurse. Then when I try to take him off, he cries because he's hungry. I latch him back on and he falls asleep! Every now and then we have a good run, if only it was every time. He'll be 6 weeks this thursday.

I totally know what you mean by not having enough time to pump! I take advantage of the time when LO is sleeping. I'd love to be eating, showering and sleeping but I really want to get breast feeding down and build my supply... so with that being said I hardly get the shower or eat and I'm pretty much a zombie. It's a hard and slow process for some of us but I applaud everyone for trying your best to continue BF! Definitely try power pumping though!

Well I'm glad it's working for you. Have you had more success today?
How are you supplementing? We've been using a bottle. I can see how even that has made her not latch on right.

Well I'm glad it's working for you. Have you had more success today? How are you supplementing? We've been using a bottle. I can see how even that has made her not latch on right.

We're using a bottle to supplement. We supplemented at the breast for a while with a syringe but it was too much for me to do alone at night. He actually does very well with going back and forth from breast to bottle. I know some babies reject the breast once they expierance an easy flow of the bottle.

We went back to the LC today and his latch was great! I was so happy to hear that. He doesn't have nipple confusion or a bad latch. This LC was very helpful compared to the last one. She told us if he's still accepting the breast then the bottle didn't confuse him and there's still hope! He weighed 11 lbs 5 oz before eating and 11 lbs 7 oz after eating. LC wants him to be getting one more oz after feeding.

So, just because you're using a bottle there's still hope! We were using the Avent Natural bottle. Now we're using the Medela Calma. I tested it out myself (with water) and indeed, you DO have to suck to get it out. I like it!

Now all thats left is to try and increase my milk supply, ughh. I think she was very surprised to see I was doing EVERYTHING to increase my supply and still had a low supply, ha.

    Thank you everybody!
