Tips/Advice for International travel with 13 month old

My husband and I are taking our son (who will be 13 months at time of travel) to the Dominican Republic at the end of February. Looking for advice since we have never traveled in an airplane with a child! Tips on strollers- Best lightweight stroller to use, but would like it to have a nice canopy for shade since it will be 85 + degrees. Bringing a car seat? He will be on whole milk- Do they have whole milk in punta cana?? How to distract him and keep him happy for a 4hr flight!!!!??!!! help!!

  • Mr.AARP & I want to CA (alone) back in Nov 2010 so it's very due able :) I even blogged about it from packing to how I went around the airport stroller free, Yes Stroller free it is very due able and no I was not wearing him. We borrowed a stroller well in CA but if you are looking at bringing one I would say go check out the baby jogger City Mini super small & great Sun covering

  • So I just reviews it & I am missing a lot of great information, I will make a updated post soon. But in the mean time let me tell you we stocked up on the food pouches & single serve milk.
  • Will you be needing the car seat for any reason while there? If not I would skip it and just use the stroller, but I don't have any good recs for those, sorry! I would assume you can get whole milk there too. We just took 14 and 16 hour flights with our 21 month old and to be honest it sucked, but 4 hours would be so much easier. I would have a cup of milk or water, or a food pouch, for take-off and landing to help with his ears. Bring snacks that he likes, certain toys/books your know he likes, but also bring some things that are brand new to him that might keep him entertained longer.

  • Gosh, I've flown with the kids so much it's scary. Some tips:

    1.  I've had 2 strollers destroyed.  They don't cover the cost because it's a free item.  So I recommend not bringing a very nice stroller.

    2.  Put your little one in a carrier of some sort if you can for the chaotic boarding process.  It frees your hands to carry bags, stow bags, etc.  If they're walking then this might not be an issue, but I kept my Moby Wrap around for such times even though I didn't usually Moby her at that age.  An Ergo would be even better.

    3.  Try to schedule the flights with nap time in mind.  If your kid naps well out and about, then that's the perfect time for take off, as it seems to put most kids to sleep and then you'll have a peaceful flight.

    4.  At 13 months of age, the best toy we discovered was asking the flight attendant for a cup of ice and just letting her play with it on the tray table.

    5.  I allow the kids unlimited TV/DVD/Ipad time on a flight even though they rarely get to watch it the rest of the time.  Load some games on your phone.  Let them look at pictures.  Electronics can be entertaining, though at that age even they didn't entertain my daughter much.  My child was as rowdy as they come, and I would focus on whatever would entertain her for the next minute or two.  Have lots of tricks up your sleeve, including tearing pictures from magazines, if it comes down to it.

    6.  Get an aisle seat, or better yet a bulk head seat, so your little one can toddle at cruising altitude.  Have lots of snacks.  On one flight, we took a fruit cup and broke it into tiny little pieces that took her about half an hour to eat.

    7.  Remember that you're probably more stressed about your kid than those around you, unless they're really melting down.  I've never had to do it but have been prepared to buy a round of drinks for folks next to me if we really had an impossible time.

  • We travel a lot with little one. I bring the car seat. But, we post adds on craigslist in the cities we are going, asking if anyone can rent a full size stroller for 2 weeks to visitors. I offer a security deposit if they want. And provide say 20 for the 2 weeks. I shop so an umbrella stroller is too small and I prefer one she can lay down n nap in when on the go. On a few occasions I have even stated specifically that I need a Chicco stroller to accommodate my car seat.

If no one responds I contact the people selling in that cities n see if they will rent for 2 weeks. Some even do it for free if u pick n drop n leave a deposit.

Just thoughts! I do it with pack n plays too!
