My son is six and a half months old. Here is what he eats on a typical day:
7a nurses breast milk
9a cereal - 2 tbs Rice oatmeal or barley, 1oz milk
11a milk - 6 oz. bottle
3p milk - 6 oz. bottle
6p cereal - 2 tbs Rice oatmeal or barley, 1oz milk
6p pur?ed vegetable - 2 tbs of sweet potato, carrot, or squash
8p nurses breast milk
His
weight gain has been on track with standard averages. As he grows, I
don't know if/when/how much "solid" foods we should be increasing.
More cereal? Frequency of feedings? More at feedings?
Thank you for any help!
Re: Eating Enough
My only question would be is he getting enough breast milk - do you have a lot in the mornings and at night? If he's getting 6+ oz when he nurses, he should be fine with that schedule. I don't make a whole lot of milk, so I have to nurse more often - mine is still at 6-7 feedings per day to make sure he gets enough.
If he continues to gain, I think you're doing great! Did your pedi have any advice at his 6 month appointment? Ours gave us this really great chart about feeding solids and breast milk broken down by age/weight. It was really nice to have, but not all of them do that.
I was told at 6 months to offer three meals a day about 1/4 cup each. I'm sure everyone's doctor tells them something different, but this is our schedule:
7- bottle 6 oz
9- 3oz fruit with a tbsp of barley
10:00 bottle 6 oz
12- 4 oz veffies
3:30- bottle 6 oz
5:00 4 oz fruit or veggie
6 bottle 4 oz
7:30 bottle 9 oz
My LO is extremely active also a big boy.
I'm assuming he is getting enough BM at his morning and evening session. This is the typical pattern he has been following since August at 2 Months old. Everyonce in a while he used to need a snack, but generally he ate around these times. I've never pumped for the AM or PM session and he has had steady weight gain. He's 6 1/2 months and has gained 10 lbs. He was 8.10 and is now 18.10
Our Dr didn't have many suggestions or give us a chart we could follow for food. They said twice a day. Which is what we had been doing with cereal for a little while. We currently just added veggies in his "dinner" time. We've not tried fruits yet as we heard they are more sweet and sometimes make babies not like veggies. So we've been trying a bunch of veggies. I guess the biggest concern is he only eats a few spoonfuls and I had read he should be eating like 2.5 oz of veggies a day. He is no where near that and I don't want to force it. Guess I will try to keep adding a little more each day and maybe some in the morning after his morning cereal.
Thanks!
