Babies: 6 - 9 Months

What's the deal with Orajel (teething gel)??

I've been using Orajel occasionally when my DD2 has bad nights when she's teething, as recommended a couple months ago by our doctor (and pharmacist). Just now I read a post below that mentioned there have been "issues" and then googled it and read that the FDA has warned against using it at all??! Yikes! Now I'm worried that I've risked her health for the last couple months....

Was I the only one not aware of this? How concerned should I be? Should I throw out the Orajel or just use it when things get really bad???

  • I used it a couple of times before I knew it wasn't recommended.  I was told that it can numb the throat and cause the baby to choke. We haven't used it since.

  • Parents have been using Orajel for a really long time, so I wouldn't worry about past use. However, my pharmacist recommended avoiding it, and using Tylenol instead. We use Camilia, which is a homeopathic medicine and it seems to work wonders.

  • The issue was the throat numbing... it can cause a baby to stop breathing and choke. The possibility is fairly low. I have one friend who always has orajel in her pocket for her son. She has no concerns at all. I wont use it cause I think there are other options out there with far less risk. I would just learn the risks vs the benefits and make a choice that is best for you.

  • If you're worried, Orajel has a natural version, which is just clove oil. We use it and it works well.

  • You aren't alone- I was completely unaware as well and then researched it last night.  I've been using it occasionally to help LO sleep when she's teething.

This is what my doctor had told me as well, so we don't use it. We use Tylenol if he seems to be in a lot of pain, otherwise the Hyland baby stuff which doesn't have benzocaine. However, I don't notice that the Hyland tablets or gel has been that helpful for him.

  • Has anyone tried the orajel naturals on their own mouth??  It does absolutely nothing.  I even tried the tablets and they just taste like sugar and do nothing to numb.  I just use ibprophin.

  • I keep some on hand for when things get really, really rough. DD had 6 teeth coming in at once so we gave her Motrin and orajel a handful of times. It seemed to help her so much! I always put some in my own mouth so I had some idea of how long it lasts and never did it right before bed or naps so she was supervised. I know there is a small risk associated so I was careful about how I used it, but Motrin alone just did not help enough!

  • Honestly, I'd throw it out. It is just not worth the risk. (At least in my opinion)
