How long would you

The past three days Jack has not been able to fall asleep before 11 pm!!! He usually goes to bed at 7. He won't nap unless he's in the car either. I think it's teething, but I'm not 100.

Anyway, I need this child to sleep. Liam, Jack and myself were grouchy, not listening, and out of control all day today.

I put him to bed at 7 tonight and he fell asleep right away. But, woke up at ten till 8 crying. I went in his room and comforted him, I gave him some Advil and kissed him goodnight. He's crying now. If I try to rock or comfort him he is fully awake and wants to play.

Should I let him CIO? I'm so frustrated.

Re: How long would you

  • How long did you let him cry before you went in this room at 8?
  • Loading the player...
  • We had something similar a month ago. We had to do CIO alllllll pver again. Ugh. Sorry.

  • And I'm so tired I was going to continue my post title in my post with, "how long would you let him CIO?"

I should say, I somewhat feel like he's getting up and staying up because I let him run around until 11... Big mistake.

If you go in his room for 5 minutes and then walk away, does it help him or make him cry louder?

Ok then, just leave him. If you are OK with CIO, I would suggest it.

  • Sounds a lot like DD2.  If it is teething, the following (our current teething gamut) may work for you:

    1. Put LO in bed.  Cue crying.
    2. Dose LO with Advil.  LO nods off briefly.
    3. LO wakes up, begins crying.
    4. Give few minutes to allow for chance of self-soothing.
    5. If crying escalates, administer Orajel and paci and/or lovey. (Even if weaning off of paci, this is a good reason for it.)
    6. Cuddle/rock/soothe until calm, standing right next to bed.  Make it clear it's still night-night.
    7. Place in bed, cue crying.  Remain at bedside until calm (approx. 5 mins).
    8. Exit room.  Cue crying.  Give it about 10 minutes.  LO should nod off.

ETA: I like this approach because it's a combo of CIO and soothing.  When LO feels cruddy I can soothe, but once LO feels better I don't feel as bad about CIO.

He's still screaming. Liam slammed the toilet lid, the dog won't stop whining. I'm in crazy town. Deep breath. Eat some tortilla chips.

I like this... I'm going to try. Liam's going to the potty every 5 seconds because his brother is keeping him up, which isn't helping. He slams the toilet seat up/down.

Good luck!  Hope you and the fam can get some peace and rest soon!  Argh at the toilet seat dilemma - it's like a vicious cycle.  The kiddos can make you nuts sometimes, can't they?

I'm so sorry!! After the 11 pm bedtime and both boys getting up twice, I was toast today.

Were you able to function at work?!

I was. I guess my body hasn"t forgotten about the months of no sleep following each of the girls' birth.
