The flu and putting baby down to sleep

J's fever got up to 104.8 today - prompting a trip to the ER (her first trip having been in November).

It's the flu. We've been hit!

DH and I have been very consistent in our letting her put herself to sleep over the last 4 months - which yes, does involve her crying sometimes, but we do Ferber and for the most part she is fine.

Until her fever spiked last night and this morning, and she cried every time we tried to lay her down to sleep... and I just couldn't bring myself to put her down.

Is this only going to get worse and worse, the more we hold her? I feel that it's too cruel to not hold my baby when she's sick and wants to be held, but at the same time, it's not safe for me to try and hold her all night or let her sleep on my chest while we're in bed or a rocking chair... and I certainly don't have it in me to stay awake all night until she beats this.

Any thoughts?

Dreading tonight...

  • Can y'all bed share and let her lay next to you? That's what my LO likes to do when he's sick. : I hope your LO feels better soon!

  • Thanks... and no, unfortunately, last night I tried to have her in the bed next to me and she wouldn't have it...! My husband and I took turns holding her from around 3 am until around 8 am when we left for the hospital.
  • Do you have a RNP or swing? I would consider using one of those at night until she kicks the flu. I hope you all feel better soon!

This. The RNP is the only thing that works for C when he is sick. The elevation helps clear their heads.

  • Did they give her Tamiflu?  Thats what they gave my son but when he had his tubes put in his ears they nurses told me I could alternate tylenol/ibprophin every 3 to 4 hours.  So I did this when he had the flu too and it seemed to help.  But I also couldn't put him down.  He slept on my chest one night and inbetween us in our bed another night.  GL!  if she has Tamiflu it shouldn't last too much longer.

  • We do have a RnP, but I thought she was too big for it by now... what is the weight limit on that thing??

They put her on Tamiflu, yes... our pedi yesterday said that it's not technically approved for children under 1, but that doctors everywhere are recommending using it this season because the flu is hitting people so hard. When we saw her again today she said she had found a lot more research supporting use of it in infants as young as 2 weeks old.

Made me a little nervous to give it to her, but she seems to be fine so far...! (better than yesterday, anyway...)
