I'm at a loss and really concerned (partial vent)

On Sat night DD woke up throwing up in her crib.  I knew something was wrong immediately, because she doesn't get up unless there's an issue.  I went in and there was throw up everywhere.  DH cleaned her up while I cleaned and replaced the sheets.  This happened twice more within a 90 minute period.  Finally she went to sleep with no problem, woke at 6am and was dry heaving.  Once she settled down she was ok.  She had a low grade fever (about a 100) and diarrhea that morning.  We followed the brat diet yesterday and she hasn't thrown up since, but her fever has gotten worse.  Last night we have her tylenol and put her down.  She went right down.  My husband checked on her at 1 am and she was burning up (103) so we woke her, gave her tylenol and TRIED to put her back down.  All she wanted to do was play/talk and wouldn't go back to sleep.  Her fever broke within 45 minutes and we decided to put her down.  She was soooo playing us and screamed.  As soon as we walked in she would lay down but as soon as we walked out she screamed.  This lasted 1.5 hrs at which point DH stood in her room by the door until she fell asleep.  She is doing the same for naps today.  She definitely has some sort of virus, but right now it is only manifesting itself through a fever and that's it.  She had a 104 this morning.  It breaks and she's happy girl again.  Sleeping though is a nightmare.  She went through a similar virus 3 months ago and it last 5 days (fever only) and she had no sleep issues.  Any words of advice??  Sorry for the vent...TIA

  • Man, that is rough. It would take me two hands to count the number of people and babies who have had an inexplicable high fever over the past month. My only suggestion is to alternate with tylenol and advil every three hours to try to keep the fever at bay. That way she can get some quality rest without you having to wake her to investigate her temperature. At first alternating the meds freaked me out, so be sure to call your pdi to make sure they approve of this method. I am a Nervous Nelly so I always get permission first, lol!

  • Boo! That sounds like no fun. The only advice I'd give, I'm sure you already know (if the fever keeps up for more than a couple of days, if it gets too high, yadda yadda).

    Good luck!

  • That sounds scary!  M just had a horrible bug, throwing up constantly, but her fever wasn't nearly that high.  Between the fever and throwing up, I'd still be worried about dehydration, even though she's stopped throwing up.  Keep an eye out for signs of lethargy and unresponsiveness.  That she is playing and interacting with you is a good sign.  I would probably call your pedi and explain the situation, and ask what they recommend if the fever doesn't ease up in a certain amount of time.  Good luck, hope she is feeling better soon!

  • Just a different view point, I asked my pedi about the alternating meds and she said it is fine to do but if one is working she prefers not to use the other one unless the 1st stops working.  Keeping it kinda like the saying an ace in the hole if that makes sense.

Good luck, went though this early Dec and it sucked but as long as you keep her fever lower and she drinks liquids and plays you are doing good.

  • Has she been seen by the pedi?
  • thank you ladies.  Hannah's fever seems to get it's highest overnight.  We had a similar virus (minus the vomiting) a couple of months ago and the doctor suggested the coupling of tylenol and advil every 3 hours.  I don't think we are there yet.  She is taking a good amount of water but we have been afraid to give her milk.  If she still has a fever tomorrow morning, I will be contacting the pedi.  Last time they said it's a virus and it really just needs to run its course.  That virus lasted 5 whole days :(  I just don't understand it.  Where is she getting this from and how come no one she's in contact with catches it.  I contacted daycare and no one from her class has been sick and no one she "hangs" out with is sick either and she hasn't given the virus to any of her friends either.  Very strange??
