Why would someone say this?

I'm in the process of looking for a job. I'm hoping to get an assistant professor job, so we're at the end of the time when they accept applications. I posted on facebook that I've sent out 37 applications so far with 3 more to go, with the ending "Surely one of these will result in a job offer?"

My SIL comments, "I know someone with just as much education who sent out 200 and still didn't get one."

Seriously? Why would someone say something like that? Just to rub it in that so far my PhD has netted me nothing?

I'm in literacy education. I tried to get one last year, and even went on 3 in-person interviews, but I suspect being 8 months pregnant didn't help.

Congratulations on being so close. Where are you getting your degree? When do you hope to graduate?

Devil's advocate here but.. I'm with your SIL on this one. I mean, it's something I might think, but not say, especially not on Facebook! That's just bad form. But she does have a point, in this economy. I don't have a PhD but I do have three university law degrees (BA and two masters) and I sent out 94 applications all over the country last summer, got one response (and I actually did get that job), but still - one interview! It's a nightmare out there.

I don't think it was meant with bad intentions, unless that's your SIL's personality. It def takes time! It's unfortunately who you know... Can you volunteer anywhere in your "extra" time to get your foot in the door somewhere? Good Luck!

Neither one of us can stand small children. Good we're not having any."

She just says those kinds of unnecessary and tactless things like that all the time.

Thank you! I am at Indiana University (although we just moved out of state for my husband's job). I'm hoping to be done either in May 2014 or 2015, depending on how quickly I get my act together.

Whoa.. okay, I take it back - what she said was awful. She sounds like a real peach! If my SIL said that she couldn't stand small children, man.. I'd want to slap her silly. You are a saint for putting up with them.

Oh, she's got a new one today. Her post is: "I am, for reasons I will not explain here, sick of pictures of babies and children under 10. Please custom filter and leave me out if you see this... unless they're the furry babies."

I'n kind of glad we live a few states away and never see them.

Sheesh, she needs to get over herself. Keep her thoughts to herself once in a while, maybe? You're lucky you don't live closer to them.
