Baby Names

Stella?

WDYT of Stella? Is it short for anything or just it's own name?  I feel like it may be trendy but it just came onto my radar and I kind of like it.

Re: Stella?

  • I know three Stella's. Two are just Stella and one is Estelle but goes by Stella.

I wouldn't consider it trendy as it has been a name that has been around forever....unlike girl names like Brinley or Harper.

  • My BFF named her DD Stella Rae. I think it's coming back in style but it's an old name.
  • I like it just like that.
  • It's definitely trendy. The little girl next door is named Stella, and it seems to suit her well. Your little Stella probably wouldn't be the only Stella in her kindergarten class.

  • It depends on what you consider "trendy". Just because it is popular, doesn't mean it is "trendy". Stella is along the same lines as the name Hazel, Maude, Betty, Emma for me.....popular way back when, and coming back. To me, "trendy" is names that you would see all of the time but not in older SSA.....like all of the Aiden, Brayden, Hayden, Caden, Jayden, Brinley, Kinley, Henley, Tenley, Harper, Piper, Bentley, Brantley, Beckham, all of the McK names, etc.

On this board, most people distinguish between popular (rank), trendy (trending upward over the past few years), and modern (the Brinley/Brayden names you mentioned).

Stella is both popular and trendy, but not modern. After a long hiatus, it hopped back into the top 1,000 in 1998 and has rocketed up into the top 100 since. At 73, it is popular, at 900+ places in less than 15 years, it is trendy. But is a trendy revival, not a modern invention/variation/elaboration.

  • NMS, but I don't dislike it.   I wouldn't consider it trendy either.  It's an old name, but not trendy

  • it's for sure way trendy where i live. it's unfortunate for us, because DH's grandmother is estelle and goes by stella, so the name has been tossed around on our list, but i can't deal with the trendiness. i think it's a lovely name.

  • I grew up with a girl named Stella Maris, said as one name, like Mary Jane, which means "star of the sea." I always thought the name was kind of fusty sounding, but that the meaning made it quite beautiful.
  • I like it as Stella, Estella sounds a little grandma.

  •  I like it as a stand alone name.

That should not be taken that I like this name at all. It's so trendy. I am so over all the -ella names in general though.

  • It's a classic, beautiful name! I may be a little biased thoughSmile

Except Stella has been around for a hundred years and those boy names you mentioned were made up in the last decade.

I think Stella is a gorgeous, classic name, and while it may be on the rise, I don't think it's destined for top 10 status.
