Asymmetrical leg creases

Finley's 4 month well check was today and it was great overall.  We saw the ARNP, who we've never seen before, instead of the doc.  She mentioned that Finley's thigh creases were asymmetrical (she had one more on her right thigh) however her gluteal crease (right below the butt) was not really uneven at all.  I had no idea that they even looked at the symmetry of babies thigh rolls.

The physical exam of her legs / hips was fine, both legs are same length and she bears weight on both legs.  Of course she said an ultrasound would rule out Hip Dysplasia, however.  So now I'm waiting for our local children's hospital to call me to schedule it and I'm here freaking out, worried about her walking, having a splint or cast and can't stay off Google.

Anyone else been through this?  I'm hoping the ultrasound shows nothing wrong. TIA!

Thanks!  My gut is telling me it's nothing.  MH didn't come with me to this appointment and said he wished he had been there, that he would've asked for the doc that usually sees her to look at it.  I'm a major worrier so this is all I need to send me into a worrying bender. Indifferent

  • did the doctor grab her legs and rotate her hips? did she have any comment on that movement? or is her ONLY concern her rolls?

take a deep breath, I don't think this is  a huge issue, and TBH another doctor *should* have picked up on hip dysplasia sooner if it was a major concern.

at least ultrasounds aren't invasive or radiation, good luck!

Thanks Holly!  Her only concern was the asymmetry of the creases, mainly the thigh crease on the right.  Her exam of Fin's hips didn't show anything abnormal.

  • I had no idea they looked at the symmetry of the rolls either. Hugs. I don't have any experience, but I really hope it is nothing, especially since her exam of Fin's hips was okay.

  • This happened to DD.  The pedi had us go for an x-ray but everything proved to be normal.  I'm not sure what they did since DH took her (I was KU and couldn't be x-rayed) but he said she didn't get upset of anything.  I'm sure it will all be fine.  Don't worry.

Thanks Toni!  Seeing lil meatball makes me smile.  Big Smile  My emotions are all over the place.  I'm seriously a hypochondriac with myself so this is really not good for me....I keep going from being okay about it (thinking it's probably nothing) to thinking the worst.

  • I'm sorry, I know it can be tough to get news like that.
It sounds like the doctor is just being overly cautious. Although it may cause some sort term anxiety odds are everything is perfectly fine and having a test will do nothing but calm your nerves.
    Good luck!

Thanks!!  Regarding the bolded, we didn't actually see the doc, it was the Nurse Practioner.  Nothing against ARNP's because I sometimes prefer them but I wish the doctor would've come in to see it as well.

I don't mind the nurse practitioner for a pap but I definetly would have wanted to see the doctor... :

I know.  I tend to avoid what I perceive as "confrontation" so I felt weird / bad asking.  MH definitely would've.....

  • First order of business--stay off the Google!  Step away now!

Second--if it's going to be a while to get in for the ultrasound, would it be possible to see your normal doc sooner?  I might feel better if he checked my LO for a second opinion--then we could of course proceed with the ultrasound if needed, but he could also answer questions and put some of your fears to rest.  And it might be that he says it's not needed, too.

DD has asymmetrical fat folds on her thighs.  I never knew it could be a concern and her pediatrician has examined her and had no issues.  She did move her legs around to check her hips during the exam, but never mentioned any problems.  I'd at least call your LO's regular pediatrician and talk it over to see how big a concern the doc thinks it is and if your LO's Dr. would want to see her prior to the u/s.

  • DS definitely has asymmetrical leg creases and I wouldn't expect anything different.  If I don't store my fat evenly on my body so why would LO?  Stick out tongue

Seriously though, we haven't had our 4 mo appt yet so I can't help there but nothing was mentioned at any previous appts.  I hope you'll get in for the u/s soon and they will let you know that Finley is just fine!  Please update for the rest of us with chunky baby legs at home!

Knowing how I am I think we're just going to do the u/s and then if it comes back okay I may switch peds.  I have been contemplating that for a little while now due to another issue. BUT if it ends up taking more than a week to get in for the u/s I may just have to schedule another appointment with a doctor there for my sanity.

I will definitely update!  Like you, I love her thigh rolls and didn't think twice about them.  I understand from my "research" now that it's only an indicator or a potential problem and that alot of docs will refer you for an u/s or x-rays for liability reasons.  Fingers crossed!

Not trying to be an alarmist, but just because the exam didn't show anything doesn't mean it's not there. LO had DDH from birth. The first exam from the nurse (in the hospital) showed it, but when the pediatrician on call examined, he couldn't feel it. The nurse felt it again on the third day, a doctor concurred, and they ordered an ultrasound. We followed up with an orthopedic doctor around 2 weeks, they thought it was just "immature hips" and had us go back at 6 weeks. Our normal pediatrician couldn't feel the click, but the 6 week follow up's ultrasound at the orthopedist showed that the hips had gotten worse. She wore a Pavlik harness for 6 weeks (the orthopedic nurse told me it's 9-18 weeks on average). She's "clear" of it now; we follow up when she's walking.

In the meantime, how are you swaddling (if you swaddle)? You shouldn't do anything to compress her legs together. When she was in the harness, I used the Miracle Blanket and left her legs out of the flappy part at the bottom. If you're using a Halo sleepsack swaddle, it should be okay (I didn't have one before she was out of the harness) since it has plenty of room for the legs.

And are you on IG? If so, look through my stream -- I have pictures of LO in the harness. It looks more painful than it really is though. We got it on right as she hit a growth spurt (AND my supply dropped off) so it was a PITA the first week or so. After that it was smooth sailing.

GL and feel free to PM if you need to vent / have questions.

Thank you for sharing your story!  So happy your LO is in the clear now :)

I am following you on IG so I checked out the pics, it doesn't look too bad and probably bothers us more than it does them!  All of her check-ups / exams have been great up til now....and today's wasn't even bad.  I'm hoping the nurse practitioner is just being overly cautious but if something does happen to show up I will be thankful it was caught early.
