Name Panic!

We are naming our baby girl Leila (pronounced Layla), but I have had a sudden onset of panic about people mispronouncing her name and all her friends spelling it wrong on invitations!! I already made the letters for her nursery and everything is set to go with the spelling Leila, but now I am second-guessing myself! Any thought, ladies?

  • As for pronunciation, I don't think you need to worry.  It looks like it should be said exactly how you said it should be said.  People probably will occasionally mispell it if they haven't seen how she spells it. I think in this case I would still use your spelling...it looks prettier imo.

  • I don't think you'll have any real problems, but nowadays people are naming ther kids the craziest things and even taking common names and adding extra letters to make it more difficult to spell anyway. So who cares, right? My name is Rachel, spelled the easiest way, and still people misspell it all the time. Rachelle, raechel, raychelle....haha it's endless!!
  • This is my first time posting on this board. I'm a first time mom and feel like I have nothing that I can ever add to a discussion...but I've got this one! My name is Leila (pronounced Layla). I'm 27, so it wasn't so common when I was younger and in elementary school and it did get mispronounced some, but I've met plenty of ladies naming their babies Leila now. It's much more common than when I was little.

And for what it's worth, even when I wasn't a fan of my name at 7 or 8 years old because I just wanted to find that little license plate for my bicycle or a keychain with my name on it like my friends Christy or Sarah could always find, people have always complimented it. And...another bonus...there are really no mean nicknames that can come from it! The biggest one I ever had was Princess Leia. I'm not a Star Wars fan, but being a princess is never bad. :)

  • With all the different ways people spell names these days,I wouldn't worry about it.Even with some of the most simple names some people tend to butcher the pronunciation. I also loved the name Leila for a while, although I wanted to pronounce it Leela. After reading a ton of blogs I found more people pronounced Leila like Layla, and very few agreed with me,that they would pronounce the name Leela. Anyway, if YOU love the name, and the spelling, go for it. The people that matter to her will always pronounce it right ;)

  • When I first read it, I did read it as "Lee-la".  I am sorry :(

It is a beautiful name, I just not familiar with that spelling, so it is probably me and not your spelling choice.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

We are still trying to decide so you are further than us :)

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • I think you're good.  That's exactly how I would pronounce Leila.  You should check out the baby names board - there are a zillion threads on this name and all its iterations, and the common consensus seems to be that Leila = "Lay-la."  As far as spelling goes, there are so many ways to spell every girl name I can think of (even Elizabeth/Elisabeth) that I think spelling is always an issue.  People who know your daughter will know how to spell her name and you can gently correct those that misspell it.
  • I wouldn't worry.  I think it's pretty common enough, and as for miss spelling on invitaions.....it's taught my kids to handle situations with grace.  I have a Kelsi and a Kyler.  Kelsi is 16 and has always received things that say Kelsey and she never gets frustrated.  Kyler is almost 3 and has just gotten to the point when ppl ask her what her name is, she says 'Kyler with a K'  or people always think its 'Tyler'.  She's quite cute about it too.  LOL!

  • Ladies, thank you for talking me off that ledge! I feel much better.  I originally thought I was spelling it the traditional way, but I got worried for a second that I had made the spelling up and nobody would ever know how to say her name!  I appreciate your comments, I feel so much better.

  • I've seen it that way!! I think you're ok! :)

  • I wouldn't pronounce Leila any other way.

I feel the same way about the name we chose: Rosalyn pronounced Rose-ah-lyn. I know people are going to call her Roz-ah-lyn or even Roz-lyn, but I'm not too worried about it.

  • I'm in the same predicament! We have chosen Layla/ Leila but I have not picked a spelling yet. It's good to hear all of the comments other the one that says all of the Leila's she knows are a PITA. This is exactly why we haven't told anyone our baby's name yet!  I can't wait to meet my little munchkin:)
  • I wouldn't worry to much about people spelling the name wrong, and pronouncing it wrong. It doesn't matter how you spell it you are always going to get some of both, trust me on that. My parents spelled my name different (Bryanna opposed to Brianna, or Breanna) and unless they know me no one spells it right, and even some who have known me for years never do, it really wont likely bother your daughter anymore then it bothered me ( I stopped caring in gr.1). And my half sister who's name is spelled at the time drastically different then any other person we came across (Krysteena) has never had a problem with people pronouncing her name just spelling and its never bothered her.
