We are naming our baby girl Leila (pronounced Layla), but I have had a sudden onset of panic about people mispronouncing her name and all her friends spelling it wrong on invitations!! I already made the letters for her nursery and everything is set to go with the spelling Leila, but now I am second-guessing myself! Any thought, ladies?
Re: Name Panic!
I think its common enough that you shouldnt have any problems...
This is my first time posting on this board. I'm a first time mom and feel like I have nothing that I can ever add to a discussion...but I've got this one! My name is Leila (pronounced Layla). I'm 27, so it wasn't so common when I was younger and in elementary school and it did get mispronounced some, but I've met plenty of ladies naming their babies Leila now. It's much more common than when I was little.
And for what it's worth, even when I wasn't a fan of my name at 7 or 8 years old because I just wanted to find that little license plate for my bicycle or a keychain with my name on it like my friends Christy or Sarah could always find, people have always complimented it. And...another bonus...there are really no mean nicknames that can come from it! The biggest one I ever had was Princess Leia. I'm not a Star Wars fan, but being a princess is never bad.
When I first read it, I did read it as "Lee-la". I am sorry
It is a beautiful name, I just not familiar with that spelling, so it is probably me and not your spelling choice.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
We are still trying to decide so you are further than us
We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013. We love her to pieces.
We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011. She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.
Ladies, thank you for talking me off that ledge! I feel much better. I originally thought I was spelling it the traditional way, but I got worried for a second that I had made the spelling up and nobody would ever know how to say her name! I appreciate your comments, I feel so much better.
I've seen it that way!! I think you're ok!
I wouldn't pronounce Leila any other way.
I feel the same way about the name we chose: Rosalyn pronounced Rose-ah-lyn. I know people are going to call her Roz-ah-lyn or even Roz-lyn, but I'm not too worried about it.
