Book Club Discussion - Never Knowing

I hope everyone enjoyed the book!

1.      How did you enjoy the book?

2.       Do you think you would have been as aggressive as Sara was in finding/questioning her birth mother?

3.       What are your feelings on adoption rights, parent?s anonymity vs children?s right to know?

4.       Were there plot twists in the book that you didn?t see coming?  What surprised you the most?

5.       Do you think the police always act in the best interest of justice?  In this case, when did you suspect that something might be amiss?

6.       Anything else you?d like to add about the book?

Re: Book Club Discussion - Never Knowing

  • 1. How did you enjoy the book?

Considering I read it in 2 days, I think I enjoyed it pretty well! I thought it was well done in that I could empathize with several of the characters and it portrayed the different viewpoints well.

    2. Do you think you would have been as aggressive as Sara was in finding/questioning her birth mother?

I don?t think I would have had the gumption to keep pursuing things like she did. I totally would have done the online research stuff, but the continual approaching Julia once she was shut down I don?t think I could have set myself up for another rejection. 3. What are your feelings on adoption rights, parent?s anonymity vs children?s right to know?

I thought this was an interesting sideline in the book, as I could believe that a parent that had put a child up for adoption would want to stay unknown, but I guess personally I would have a hard time doing that I think (course if I was in the circumstance of being raped by a killer, maybe I would change my view that I could never do this). I did think that Sara?s want for just ?medical history? was a little weak, you would think that it might be a good idea for adoption agencies to have that type of information about the parents if they might want to share. I can imagine it would be difficult being adopted and not having that sense of knowing who your parents were, but I guess altogether I?d stay on the side of the parents having the right to stay anonymous.

    4. Were there plot twists in the book that you didn?t see coming? What surprised you the most?

I wish I could remember it a bit better. I always finish the books too early and really should start later, but I didn?t expect to finish it in 2 days! I would say that I figured something was up with the police but I didn?t know what.

    5. Do you think the police always act in the best interest of justice? In this case, when did you suspect that something might be amiss?

I?m sure that the police don?t ALWAYS act in the best interest of justice. I could see to a detective on a case like that where there is a likelihood of other people being hurt to somewhat ?sacrifice? one person seems worth it and a struggle to deal with. I was kind of amazed with the expectations and treatment that they had of Sara with respect to helping with the case. I?m not sure that I could have put my family, relationship and self in that danger. I would think that I might have taken off, changed my name, and started over.

    6. Anything else you?d like to add about the book?

I thought that it did a good job making Sara?s dad a believable character and incredibly scary and freaky.

  • I've only made it through 1/3 of this book. I've really enjoyed it though! Life has just been busy the last few weeks. I'll try to find this thread once I'm finished. Maybe this weekend.

Thanks :)  I thought it was interesting, would like to see your thoughts when you finish, I feel kind of silly discussing books with myself :)
