Dairy Sensitivity/Code Brown

So its just now hitting me that maybe Samuel has some sort of sensitivity to milk and/or dairy together. His next doc appt is Wednesday, so obviously I will bring it out. But basically his poop is mush, not diarrhea, but more like actual baby poop. Not toddler poop from a toddler that eats anything and everything we eat. He also gets a mean diaper rash when he has this poop.

So thoughts? I am considering trying a whole milk alternative for a couple days, see if that helps anything. I haven't done a whole lot of research on it, since I have just been talking about it this morning. But I thought I'd ask here, first. What are you using as an alternative, if you are using one?

Re: Dairy Sensitivity/Code Brown

  • I would try cutting out all dairy for a week. Just make sure he's getting plenty of fats like avocado.
  • Loading the player...
  • That is what I am thinking, I knew avocado is an excellent source of fat for him. Do you substitute something for milk? I'm reading that soy or rice milk are substitutes. And found some fresh juice and avocado recipes for fat substitutes.

  • I wouldn't recommend soy, and I'm not supposed to drink it because I get migraines. I would do almond or coconut over rice milk. I don't know the exact nutritional stats but I would assume they are more fatty.
  • Yeah, I just read that Almond is higher in fat. So I think we will start experimenting tomorrow. Since H already gave him milk today. Oy... this should be fun.

  • We started transitioning Gator to milk a week before her birthday. I was mixing formula and milk, so was getting 1 to 2oz of milk in each cup. Her asss was a mess. On top of that, she would occasionally puke up the milk and we would be dealing with a giant cottage cheesey mess. I stuck it out for another week, since everyone on the boards was saying there is an adjustment period and their kids a weird poo and everything. But after two weeks, I was done. If she was puking and crapping like crazy from 1 or 2oz, I could only imagine what it would be like if she was on full milk and no formula. I switched to almond milk unsweetened and she has had no problems. In fact, I didn't even transition her because SO thought I already had and handed her a cup of only almond milk. She was fine...no rashes or anything. And this is a kid that can have a teaspoon of anything with citrus or tomato, and have a full blown diaper rash for the next two weeks. She has sensitive asss cheeks. But the almond milk has been good.

Samuel is the same way with oranges and tomatoes. His face breaks out in a rash.He can eat an orange if I put it in his mouth with no issues, but if he goes at it, the acid effects his skin. Or this is how we have noticed it happening. He has eczema, so I know his skin is ultra sensitive.

I know it's completely unrelated to the real purpose of your post, but if you travel anywhere you should give the oranges and tomatoes another try.  Lily has never had a problem with tomatoes at home; she loves them!  But when we went to BC/Washington last summer, every time we gave her tomato she would get a red mark around her mouth.  I guess they're just far more acidic there or something.  It was really strange.

Huh, good to know! The only reaction he has had to foods high in acid, so far just oranges, orange juice, and tomatoes, is a rash on his face. But I wonder if it would be different somewhere else.
