ate some bad spinach dip...

Hi,

I am probably being paranoid but I didnt realize that there was a torstitos spinach dip that had been opened a couple days before and not put back in the refrigerator (left in the cupboard)  Anyway my mom and I had some of it yesterday with chips and it tasted fine but then i realized it had been opened and should have been put in the fridge!  Ugh, this was 24 hours ago and not feeling ill or anything but I am wondering if this would be a listeria risk or if you think i will be ok...............  i have been trying to be so careful too!  annoying!

  • If you are not feeling sick I am sure your fine. From what I understand the baby is not taking any actual food from you at this point anyway.

  • If you don't feel sick, you're fine. If you had listeria you'd know it.

  • Factually, you can have listeria and not show symptoms initially.  However, something like spoiled food, if it really had spoiled, would have upset your stomach in a more immediate way.  Ultimately though, what's done is done.  You can't go back and change it and there's no pill you can take to stop yourself from getting sick so try not to worry about it.

This.  If you haven't gotten sick yet, you're unlikely to get typical "food poisoning" symptoms.  You can let your doctor know at your next visit......That said, listeria is pretty rare, so hopefully you'll be just fine.  You can try checking the ingredients on the dip- a lot of the jarred/on the shelf type dips don't have real dairy in them and I think the refrigeration directions are just so that they last longer.

  • I don't think the spinach dip would be prone to listeria specifically, that's more typical in meat/deli products. If anything, if it was 'bad' you'd get food poisoning which happens within hours, you're 24 hours past eating it so are likely just fine.

  • Ok thanks guys, i have my nt scan today so i will mention it to my doc if i see him.  I agree that it would probably have made me and my mom sick right away if it was bad so i will try not to fret.

milk ingredients is dairy, but if it was ok to be on a shelf unrefrigerated before opening, it was probably pasterurized and vacuum sealed and no listeria.  Listeria is harbored in unpasteurized milk and cheese and deli meat, but it's very unlikely that there are listeria bacteria in your pantry that would have made it into your dip, so you're probably safe
