The paci dilemma..

Anyone's kid still attached to theirs?

P LOVES hers. She really only ever has it in the car, for naps, and when shes sick. I personally do not think its an issue, shes still little, but my family gives me SO much crap about it.

If your kid still has one, when do you plan to kick "the habit".

Re: The paci dilemma..

  • DS uses it for sleeping. I stopped giving it in the car, but have done that a lot more recently since I've been house-hunting and he doesn't get good naps since we're out all day.

I always said I'd stop when he started teething, but he seriously doesn't have any teeth yet.

After we get settled in a new house, I'll come up with a plan. I'm hoping to kick the habit before #2 arrives in June - as time goes on, he just really loves that thing more and more. If not by June, hopefully before his birthday.

I think I'll start with taking it away for naps, then go from there.

  • We are going to try to "wean" our daughter slowly before her second birthday. We are expecting #2 the end of March and wouldn't dare take it away from her while she adjusts to a new baby. I was talking to my grandma about people's ideas on when to take away binkis, or when they should sit at the table ect. She told me let her have her binki and sit in her highchair, she has her whole life to sit at a table, let her be a baby for a while :)

  • Sophia has it all day. I'm not worried about and I couldn't care less if anyone else had a problem with it. It's just not on my radar to wean at this point.
  • We still use it for sleeping.  She has a hard time giving it up once she wakes but it does stay in her crib with her lovie.  We are expecting in less than 6 weeks and take it from there.  I am guessing we will wean once she turns two or moves to a big girl bed.

  • DS loves his!! We only give at nap and bedtime but sometimes he sees one and goes crazy for it. I'm not concerned yet. I'm waiting to wean, especially at night!
  • I agree with grandma. But Michaela only has hers if she is going for a nap. I always have one on me just incase andshe doesn't need it to fall asleep. I think as long as it's not causing teeth problems or social issues, like taking it and using it at school I am going to let Michaela have hers as long as she wants. I sucked my thumb till I was like 12 and only at night and I think I turned out ok.

  • I forgot Ljs one day when we were out and about holiday shopping. She ended up going to sleep without it in the car and When we got home I moved her into the house, she woke a little but went back to sleep without it. We dropped it cold turkey that day. She never asked for it and sleeps better without it. We were planning on taking it away by the end of the year (2012) so it worked out well.

  • Our goal was to take it away once she turned two, but that is when the new baby will be about a month old. I figured that may be too much transition?

I also want her to be in a big kid bed in the next few months.. off the bottle.. etc.

But then I think of how shes barely 16 months old, and I want her to be little forever!

  • We took DD's away shortly before age 1. She was walking around with her paci in her mouth and I could feel the stares. She only got it in the car, out in public when I needed her to be quiet, etc, so she wasn't super attached. It was pretty easy to take it away, actually.

All that being said, one night about a month after I took it away, she would.not.sleep. and I wished like you wouldn't believe that she would still take a paci. I tried to give it to her and she just spit it out and kept right on crying. So don't take it away until you are ready! Smile However, I am glad now that she is done with it completely, with a new baby almost here I hopefully won't have to worry about her taking his pacis.

  • I let my kids keep their pacis until...whenever, pretty much.  I mean, you know, within reason.  Kindergartener with a pacifer is...just no.

But with DD1 I didn't stress getting rid of the paci.  I think she was maybe 2 1/2, and one night I got a wild hair in my butt when I noticed she hadn't specifically made sure she'd grabbed the paci.  I started to tuck her in and read a book, etc, and when she asked for her paci I said, "I dunno where it is, I think it disappeared."  She whined a bit, but I kept telling her it'd disappeared.  Instead, I stayed with her until she went to sleep, then went through and gathered every paci I could find and got rid of them.  She may have asked for it two or three nights after that, and then the paci was a thing of the past.

DD2 is still pretty heavily dependent on hers, but I figure another year, like DD1, and she'll be fine to kick the habit.

  • I think we'll try and get rid of it soon though I don't really want to since DD sleeps so well!  DD only uses it during sleep.

  • I think that if you're only using it at nap time and bed time, it's not that big of a deal. However, I also think the longer you wait, the harder it'll be. So I guess there is no right or wrong answer here - Just go with your gut and do what you feel is best for P :D

  • We are trying to wean him off slowly.  He loves his paci and will take it anytime he finds one.  We are trying this week to only do cars, naps and bedtime.  He doens't do it at all at daycare so I know he can do it.  We often just forget to take it from him so he finds them all over the place.  I would love for him to be off them when he's 18 months completely but I don't want to rush him either.

  • Wyatt was so attached to his...it was a nightmare.  If he didn't have one all the time he would just scream. So we went cold turkey..I felt cruel for a week but after that he doesn't cry or whine so much anymore,
