BlueCross BlueShield members

I have this insurance and I have been calling for days trying to see if breast pumps are covered. But I never actually found out. If anyone else has this, is it covered or was it covered for you? I have HMO btw...

  • Thank you and how do you get in touch with a representative? When I call, I'm always speaking with a machine..

  • I was told it was covered 100. But I need to buy through a medical supplier. The lady I talked to actually found a supply store in my town so I'm gonna go check it out on Monday. But now I'm curious if they will cover it unless I have latch problem or some other issue.

    Do you know if they have to be manual or electric?

  • I think it really depends on which BCBS you have there are really a million and what your specific plan states. I have BCBS for federal employees and it was really easy, but we had to go through CVS Caremark specifically. For me, the best place to start was the Service Benefit Plan guidebook.  It is the official document the details what is and isnt covered under your plan and details co pays, rules, etc. For us, they handed them out durring our open enrollment period and it's available as a PDF on our plans website. In the guide it specifically outlines what is covered (the Ameda double electric or the Ameda handheld) and how to order it. I would start by looking on the back of your insurance card for your specific plans website. Go to that site and see if you can find your benefit guide, this way when you do call and get ahold of someone, you are educated as to what your rights are under your plan. Good luck!!!  Btw... I ordered mine last Sunday and according to the UPS tracker it will arrive on Monday!

  • I have the federal BCBS as well, all I had to do is call the mail order script line and they took all my info and said she would ship it in 3-5 business days.

  • I had to sign up for their better beginnings progream.(it is free.) Then they gave me a coupon for one. I have up to 275 dollars to spend on one, but I can't get it until Feb 1st.
  • I have BC, but I need to get a prescription from my doctor and get the pump from a durable medical supply company for it to be covered. Also, when I get the automated line, I just hit zero and I get a representative.

    I have BCBS, and they won't cover a pump unless there's something "wrong" with me or baby that we can't BF. Our plan was "grandfathered." Bummer.

    Same here! Although the upside to grandfathered plans is that they can't significantly increase member contributions or make major changes to coverage like increasing copays or deductibles so I figure it may actually be cheaper to buy my own pump under a grandfathered plan. ;

  • I emailed customer service through the website, but since my plan doesn't renew until July 1, and I'm due Feb 1, we will have to buy one before I would be eligible to get a free one.
  • I have a PPO with BCBS of MA. My pump's covered 100% through a durable medical equipment supply place if I have a prescription. They told me I could find a provider through the website, but the site says there isn't one with 100mi of me (and I live in the Raleigh-Durham area, so I don't believe that), so I'm going to have to call and ask for a list of providers.

    FWIW, instead of calling, I emailed through the website and got an answer same-day.
