Babies: 3 - 6 Months

weaning off bottle at bedtime

So right now our 5 1/2 LO is on a routine of BM every three hours and then just before bed she gets a bottle of formula and then usually a few hours later 2 to 3am in the morning she gets another.

When did everyone start getting your LO to bed without the bottle and how...i also read because she is now teething its not good to put her to bed with a bottle because of the sugars etc.

She definitely wants the bottle before bed..its kind of a routine.

Re: weaning off bottle at bedtime

  • I didn't stop giving my first son a bottle right before bed until right around the time he turned 1 year old.

You can do a quick wipe of the teeth with a wash cloth after the bottle if you are concerned about teeth. But I think the concern is more of giving them the bottle in the crib and them falling asleep with it in their mouth and the milk sitting in their mouth all night.

  • With DD, I nursed her before bed up until her first birthday.  Then after that I offered a sippy before bed.  We just made sure we brused her teeth after.  Babies still need something to eat at night.  You can push the bottle a little earlier and then do stories and brush teeth right before bed, but don't kill the bottle completely.

  • Almost 6 months old but still nursing at night to "fill his tank" before bedtime. I'm not sure when I would last feed him if not right before bed? This way he will sleep as long as possible before getting hungry. Until they are eating alot of solids at like a year old, I don't know that it's necessary to get rid of that feeding...otherwise they may wake earlier for a night feed.
  • LO is 5.5 months too and still does a bottle at bed time, but we now (since hes got on tooth and another one on the way...) use the finger brush thing with the Orajel gum cleaner after his bottle (he used to fall a sleep sometimes with the bottle) but now we do stories, bottle, brush teeth/gums and bed.  I do a dream feed, so yes I think its kinda point less to "brush" them BUT at least they get cleaned once a day! ;).  also, if your really that concerned A) talk to your Dr and B) in a few weeks when you can give some water, try transition from a bottle of formula to a bottle of water...just to keep the habit?
