Sudafed???

Ok I managed to confuse myself. I have been told in the past that I could take Tylenol cold and I was getting some today but at the last second I asked the pharmacist just to be sure and he told me to take sudafed instead, as did another woman paying at the same time who informed me she was P. I was in such a foggy place I just went with it, but now it's time for a 2nd dose and dr google is giving me mixed signals. Should I take this or not? I am definitely really congested and have a history of congestion like this turning into a violent sinus infection and or bronchitis. Have others been told sudafed is safe??

Re: Sudafed???

  • My dr told me it was okay, but the pharmacist told my husband that is wasn't.  We called the dr back and she said that they hear that back from a specific chain of pharmacists but that the research that they go by says it is fine, especially after the first few weeks.

  • I think "safe" is subjective and it depends on your OB. I received a list of things that I can take from my practice. The nurse who gave it to me was very adamant that it might be different than what sally or betty got but that's their list of safe medications.

I would call your office, or if your insurance company has a 24/7 nurse line try that.

  • I was told that it is fine, as long as it is plain sudafed.( not 12 hr and not multi-symptom with other medicines added)

  • Thanks ladies. So bizarre that my cVS pharmacist actively recommended the switch. I'm going with it bc I need relief and that's what we have it he house coupled with positive evidence from you all. Will call my doc in the morning to confirm before taking more.

This is what I was told, too.

  • It's important to consider too that there are two types of sudafed: one that has phenylephrine as the active ingredient, and the "classic" kind that has pseudoephedrine as the active ingredient. The classic one you can't just get off the shelf anymore; it's the one you have to show ID and sign for behind the counter.

I'm not sure what differences there might be in the safety of either, but can say I took the classic kind a few times late in my last pregnancy with no ill effects.
  • My OB said no.  No decongestants, but especially in the 1st Trimester.

I was actually ok'd to take it with my DS and as a pharamacist myself thought it was ok for a very limited amount of time, but apparently things have changed.

So, I vote no, but that's jsut me

    PgAL/PAL welcome, always!
  • Thanks again ladies.  Haven't taken anything today and have a call in to the doc to see what's allowed.  The phone secretary (note - not phone nurse) said "Sudafed is on the allowed list" but when I asked for clarification on which kind she said she wasn't sure and had to leave a message for the doc.  Waiting for a call back.  Will keep you all posted in case anyone is curious.
  • Swell.  Per my OB, neither sudafed is allowed.  (MAJOR OOOPS for the 2 doses I took yesterday.  And major annoyance at the pharmacist who insisted that it was what I needed / at the other P mom that said she was allowed it / and mostly at myself for trusting strangers rather than my own gut & just calling the doc immediately.  Live and learn.)  So I wanted to reconfirm Tylenol Cold & Sinus to be on the approved list and now the phone secretary was unsure (though 2 hours ago she confidently told me it WAS on the ok list).  She's checking and going to call me back again.
  • and the final verdict - no tylenol cold either!!!  no idea why in the past the lady who answers the phone and is sorta your first line of support for questions - really she just shuttles messages back and forth has told me in the past that tylenol cold and sinus was on the approved list but thought to verify today and got totally different info. per my doc, only regular tylenol is allowed for fevers.  no decongestants.  back to steaming myself out in the shower
