Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When is it ok to let LO sleep with a blankie or stuffed animal?

My DS got a glow worm for Christmas and he loves to hold it and listen to the songs before he goes down for the night.  Tonight he was in my lap holding it so tight and sort of drifting off.  Got me to wondering when it's ok to let them sleep with things in the crib.

Re: When is it ok to let LO sleep with a blankie or stuffed animal?

  • It may be flame worthy but DD has been sleeping with a blankie and her glow worm in her crib since she transitioned into her crib at 4 months. I guess I wasn't too worried about it since we have an Angel Carer monitor.

  • I think this is your opinion. I've heard 1 year but my LO has had a blanket And stuffed animal in his crib since he was 4 months. As soon as I knew he could move it if he covered his face I was ok with it.  Trust your instincts.

  • Our LO has been sleeping with a blanket for a while. I know he would be fine when he started to pull things off his face. Now sometimes he'll sleep with a little stuffed frog.

  • I tested DS's lovey out by scrunching it as tightly as I could to see if it would stifle my air flow. Try as I might, I couldn't smother myself with it, so I let DS start sleeping with it around 6 months. When he can't find his paci, he will often suck on his lovey to help get himself back to sleep.

  • I think the official suggestion is a year, but I go with common sense.  I feel if your LO can move around easily, they'll be ok.  I think the issue is the baby not being able to roll away or lift their head from something suffocating them.  DS was still waking at night at 6 months, so I took him out of the sleep sack and gave him a light blanket, and that 1st night, and ever since, he sleeps through the night.  Maybe we're not supposed to use a blanket, but he gets around very well and he sleeps so much better, I'm not too worried.

  • My daughter sleeps with a stuffed animal and a blanket at night. She never has any problems. Like the PPs said, if your baby can move around then I'd say they are okay. Trust your instinct! :)

  • Yeah, so going to get yelled at for this but...

The twins have been sleeping with blankets since the beginning.  They have a hospital blanket, softer blanket and a fuzzy blanket (their room gets really cold) when they sleep.  Now that they are rolling, they do roll with the blanket but since they are so used to having them, it doesn't freak them out.

I've even walked in with a blanket on DS's face.  I moved it, he was fine.  It was just on top like he moved it there.  Both cribs also have a pillow and stuffed animal on the other end from where they sleep.  I've alos walked in on DD being at that end, under the teddy bear with her leg sticking out of the crib.  This child can get herself into more precarious positions in that crib.  Was the second time I found her with her leg hanging out.  I also once found her with her arm hanging out.  We can't figure out how she's doing it but she's so comfy we just leave her.

  • Both of mine slept with blankets from the beginning, on their bellies. I use crib bumpers, ds 8 mos. has had a couple of stuffed toys in his crib for several months. I just put a layer of foam rubber on top of his super thin crib mattress. We did use an angel care monitor with both of them.
