Cribs?

Hi girls!

Baby is coming soon and we are still crib shopping. There are so many kinds and styles. Are convertible cribs a good investment? Which are the best brands to select from?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Cribs?

  • We have two convertible cribs and plan on getting one for this baby too.  We've been very happy with them and love the full size conversion.  Ours are both Creations brand.  Good luck!

  • not to sound stupid....but it converts from crib to toddler bed right to full size bed? does this mean they skip the twin size bed? Just curious.

A convertible crib is as you described and you often need to purchase a seperate kit to convert it to a full size bed. Some cribs will convert to a toddler bed by removing one side of rails. The ikea cribs are like that. The ikea gulliver is a popular affordable crib and it converts to a toddler bed.
  • I'm looking at convertible cribs too and really liked this DaVinci one in expresso...It comes with a toddler rail as well.

  • I think convertible cribs are very smart. We are getting the Graco Stanton because of good reviews/safety ratings and the price. Plus I like the simple look. I hear Ikea cribs are good too.

  • We're expecting our first LO in a just a few weeks, and bought the Graco Lauren w/changer combo. The changer is removable and can even become a nightstand. The crib is also convertible when you get the side rail for it, of which we can order when we need it. I like the simplistic, but sophisticated look of the crib, and we got it in Cherry, but really all the colours look nice.
  • I get the intent of a convertible crib that can be used as a full size bed, especially for people who want to buy one very nice matching set of furniture and have it last for 18 years.

But if you're not going to do that, I don't get it. I can't imagine putting a 3 year old in a full size bed, nor can I imagine having room for a large bed in a child's room full of toys, play kitchen, etc. I would not put a full size bed in my guest room, I'd rather have a queen in there for adult guests, so I see no use for a full until the child is 12. And a twin headboard is not that expensive, so it's not like you're saving tons of money by buying a convertible crib.

  • We have the Graco Lauren. It does convert to a toddler bed and a full headboard (headboard only, you need to buy a full bed frame for it). We don't intend to convert it though. We will just get DS a twin bed and give the crib to our next baby. Honestly, in my crib search, I really wasn't coming across a lot that *weren't* convertible. I just kind of ignored that feature.

  • Potomac...I kind of agree....I do not see using a full size bed either. I would go out and buy a twin bed when the time is right..

Which type of crib do you suggest? one that just converts to toddler bed? Any good ones in particular?

I never thought of Ikea....interesting idea!! I love putting that stuff together!

This. And if you end up with a little beaver there are several on my bmb they can chew up your very expensive crib, which makes it a while lot less desirable to use "forever". We have an IKEA Gulliver and love it. If DD wrecks it... Who cares. We also love our IKEA dresser that doubles as a changer. I have a girlfriend whose kiddo drew on their furniture with permanent marker. I'd rather get her nice furniture when she can appreciate it.
