Has anyone ever pushed bedtime later for 7 month old?

DD has gone to bed at 6:30 for months.  But for the last bit she's struggled.  Tonight I tried again and same old - pushes up to crawling position in crib, cries, not happy.

So I kept her up until 8, tried again.  This time she played in my lap for a bit, but finally settled to sleep and is staying there.   So I'm wondering if she's trying to tell me 6:30 is too early.  My biggest concern is her last nap ends at 5 usually... so is keeping her up until 8 or past too long... I don't want her to be sleep deprived.  But also not interested in making her cry when she's just trying to tell me she's not tired yet..

Re: Has anyone ever pushed bedtime later for 7 month old?

  • Around 7 months was when the 2-3-4 thing became true for us: wake, up for 2 hours, nap, up for 3 hours, nap, up for 4 hours, bed. At that point, he still took a third nap sometimes so the "4" was hit and miss.

What time is she up for the day? How many hours does she nap?

  • Neither of our boys has ever been interested in going down that early. If you focus on her cues vs. the clock, I'm sure you'll settle into something that works for all.
  • 5pm-8pm is three hours, that's two rest/active cycles, which makes it a fairly natural time if 6:30pm isn't working.  You may need to bring that time earlier as she gets older, and it might be a fluke at the moment, but if it's working, great.

(2-3-4 didn't work for us - it was always 90min increments)

  • Ah... I've never heard of 2-3-4!  Thank you!  That does kind of fit!

She's up in the morning between 7:30 and 8:30.  First nap at 9 or 10 (or 11... depends).

Until now the 2 hour wake time rule has been just about bang on.  It's just recently it's not working, which makes sense because she's getting older.  But I was worried 3-4 hours awake time in the evening was too much before bed - I thought maybe our troubles were due to overtiredness.

Our bedtime routine works well, it puts her to sleep.  But when she goes in to her crib she pops awake and it's clear she's not really tired.

I DO listen to and follow her cues, but I think perhaps her nighttime cues were false alarms just due to routine.   She would start to get fussy around 6 out of habit or maybe even due to boredom.

Thanks for the help.  I'm going to keep the later time for a bit and see if that helps her.  Otherwise it's just a two hour rock and play fest until she finally gets tired and sleeps.

  • We've never done a bedtime that early. DD1 is in bed by 8:30pm, so DD2 just naturally went to bed around the same time. She actually doesn't fall asleep until a little after 9pm most nights, but since she naps during the day, it doesn't really matter. Even at 6-7 months old, we've never done a bedtime earlier than 8pm.

This.  My DS1 was a 1 nap-a-day kid almost from birth, and he would only sleep 10pm-730am with 1-2 night wakings to nurse for most of his 1st two years.  He's 2.5 now and sleeps the same hours at night, but all the way through most nights, and only naps 1-2x a week now.  I was/am exhausted, but he rarely lacks energy and is usually good natured, so sleep deprivation only seems to apply to Mama.  We never forced routine, but followed his cues, and he eventually created his own routine.

  • She set her own bedtime months ago.  That's when she was tired and that's when you put her down she would stay down.

Of course now today she refused the 4:00 nap, so we're back to a 6:30 bedtime... but it will be in line with the 2-3-4 discussed above, so I'm thinking it will work.  She's just started napping longer in the day (used to be a 20 - 30 minute napper) so I suspect she's either ready to drop that third nap, or have a later bedtime.   Time will tell!
