May 2012 Moms

Things I've learned since becoming a mommy...

1. You honestly can fall asleep siting up holding a baby and not drop them.  When women would tell me this I would be horrified, imagining my sleep deprived self falling asleep, my arms going limp, and the baby falling onto the floor!  I can't tell you how many times I've fallen asleep holding him and woke up in the exact same position.

2. This is going to sound so sappy, but nobody, and I mean nobody, could have told me the emotions I would feel toward my baby. Everyone said "It's such an unselfish love," and "It's like your heart walking around outside your body." It's not that I didn't believe them. I just didn't have the capasity to actually feel those emotions until my baby was born.  No one could have prepared me for that before his arrival.

Something I have yet to learn:  Does it ever change? Does a time ever come that you don't look at your child and immediately offer up a prayer of protection and thanksgiving?   Just like everything else in life, do you start to take your children for granted when they get older?  Just a thought...

Your turn!  What did you not know before your child / children were born.

  • The cat is delicious.  It must be.  Why else would my 8 month old keep chasing it and trying to lick it?

Exactly. And apparently I have no sense of humor because she thinks the dog is absolutly HILARIOUS!

  • Can I just say I love seeing you girls grow into motherhood and your hearts grow into a mothers heart since we all joined here after just finding out we would be May 2012 mommas!! You are all amazing women and amazing mommas!

There is no way to explain how you will feel toward your child until you have one of your own I learned that 8 years ago with my first. It is fun for me to see people discover this love.

  • I've learned that it is SO much harder then I ever anticipated.  But the reward is so great! It is the most meaningful thing I have ever done in my life.

  • The biological fact that as soon as baby latches on for some milk, I will realize I have to pee.

  • I too had no idea the dog was so funny.

I didnt know how it felt to be such a proud mama.  How a special needs child changes your perception of everything and makes you celebrate the little moments so much more.

I also didnt know that this would be the funnest age yet :) Easily entertained and not quite mobile, playing together and not getting into trouble.

People always said they grow up fast but dang...I feel like I blinked and my little sweet preemies are over 20 lbs...

  • I completely agree with your points above.  To answer you question - I've been told you never stop worrying. My mom still worries about me and I'm 37. I still get the keep your doors lock, don't be out too late (after 7 pm), etc.

I didn't know how instant my love would be.

I didn't know that I wouldn't care one bit about getting up 2 sometimes 3 night.  I always thought it would bother me but it honestly bothers my husband (he feels badly for me) and a few friends more than I.

I didn't know how much I would enjoy being his mom gym - I literally lay in the floor and let him crawl and climb all over me.
