Teachers Come In

I am interviewing for a position on Monday- and need some advice.

I have always taught high school choir (6 years) and am interviewing for a 5th and 6th grade music teacher position.

I am interested in the job because I know it will be less hours for me and my family... but I know better than to say that as my reason for leaving high school.  I currently work 60+ hour weeks, and hubby and I are hoping to have LO#2, but there is no way I can work that much with DS and a newborn, but we need my income to make the mortgage payment...

I know they are going to ask why I am leaving high school. Do you have any suggestions on how I should word my answer?  Somehow saying "no competitions and extra concerts" doesn't sound very pc

Re: Teachers Come In

  • First, make sure you're sure about the time required. My sister is in 5th grade and her music teacher does recitals, after school lessons, and a club. I'm sure she's not working 60+ hours and I doubt those things are as stressful as competitions and such...but there is still an after hours requirement.

When interviewing, I would say that you've greatly enjoyed honing the skills of young musicians but you are very excited for the opportunity to introduce children to the joys of music rather than just working with those who have already found it... and like PP said, explain why you want to work with younger students.

  • I agree with the PP. I would stick to why you want to work with the youngster students (when their musical interests really begins to blossom, etc) and not why you are leaving the HS. I would throw in the "flexibility" aspect if needed.

  • I am a 5th grade music teacher.  While it's not as much work as HS choral, there is still extra stuff.

I would tell them that you'd like to work with a younger population.  You could also say that you'd like to challenge yourself to really insure that these children really get off on the right musical "foot"........so to speak.

  • Hello to a fellow music teacher!  :). I teach choir to grades 5-12.  I think you should say something about wanting to teach to younger students.,etc.

Good luck with your job search!  I recently resigned from being one of the musical directors...just took so much time.  I think it's important to realize when you have too much on your plate.  My kids are 3 and almost 2...and there were numerous times when I wanted to take them to a play date or something else and couldn't because of work.  I'm much happier now!

    good luck to you!:)
