Breathable bumpers on outside of crib?

I know they say no bumpers. And we haven't used any. DS seems to love to stick his arms and legs through the slats when he's sleeping though. If I put a breathable bumper outside the crib would that still be a SIDS risk? There would be space between my son and the bumper but he wouldn't be able to get his limbs out. Or is this a bad idea? I've resigned to repositioning him once or twice a night but if there's a safe way to avoid that I'm interested. And I do not want to put bumpers inside the crib. I would rather wake up and help him.
Thanks!

  • I'm not sure it would stay in place. May continually fall down. I thought the upside of the breathable bumper was that its safe to use inside the crib.

  • We had the same issue and got this

I LOVED these breathable bumpers. It is breathable, not a SIDS risk, we could still use it when we converted to a toddler bed, and they couldn't them as leverage to try to climb out (some kids do with traditional and breathable bumpers)

  • The recommendations are no bumpers including breathable.

Those wonder bumpers look interesting but they are a lot more than I'd like to spent Guess ill just keep readjusting!

    Thanks guys!

  • DD used to stick her arms and legs out, a sleep sack kept her legs in and her arms never woke her up.

  • Is he bothered by his limbs sticking out of the crib?  If it's not bothering him, I would leave him be.  Both of my boys went through short stages of getting their arms and legs through the slats but usually within a week, they had figured it out and we didn't have any issues.

I would honestly skip the bumpers and let LO learn...plus, they can be used as leverage to climb up and out once LO gets a bit bigger and that's the last thing I wanted to encourage!  I prefer my kiddos to use their crib as long as possible instead of learning to climb out at an early age (maybe my kids are just monkeys though).

  • I've always used regular bumpers, but thinking about getting the breathable ones this time around for the beginning and using the sleepsaks while there young and once they get old enough to move there head etc I'll put the bumpers back on due to my wild sleepers and limbs getting caught and heads getting banged.

  • HAHA I'm sure DS will be a monkey too so I'm worried about that. He has wanted to stand on his own since he was born and can now, but can't pull himself up yet.  It's only a matter of time though.

He does wake himself up at times but I'll just deal with that. Sometimes his arm will be out and he won't seem to care, I don't go in unless he is actually crying because of it.   Hopefully he figures out how to get his arm back in soon!

  • I tried the breathable bumpers on our crib and besides looking ugly, the instructions said not to use when the LO can pull themselves up to standing, which is about the time that we needed the bumpers to keep limbs from getting stuck between the slats.  Even the breathable bumpers can be a strangulation risk so the safety groups don't recommend them as an alternative to traditional bumpers.

We went through a few incidents of legs or arms being stuck in the slats and while it seemed distressing at the time, it stopped within a few weeks.

  • Seeing a few pics like this one was enough to tell me no bumpers.  Unless injuries are occurring, I wouldn't bother...
