December 2012 Moms

freaking out

I'm a ftm and have this app on my phone to track feedings / changings / Ect. It also days how many days old my son is. It turned 28 days and I read sids is most common between 28 days and 3 months. I'm so scared. I take precautions with it. Breastfeeding which I do reduces the risk. And no tummy sleeping. But occasionally during breastfeeding I fall asleep with him in my bed when we do side lying position. I have researched but can't find exactly how common is sids ? I always wake up and check his breathing. I'm nervous and don't know how to calm down about it. Or should I not calm down about it? I feel like I'm loosing my mind.

Re: freaking out

  • I feel the same way! But all we can do is try to reduce the risk and carry on. I think it is normal for mums to worry but all our worrying isn't going to protect them more. It is such a scary thing!

  • Maybe I am foolish, but I usually assume that we won't have problems with SIDS if we take all the precautions we can. Once you do what you can to minimize risk, what's the point of worrying, though?
  • In my job I have literally seen children and babies suffer through the most horrible things imaginable. For a while it was hard to imagine healthy children. In fact, I remember holding my cousin's perfect baby and being weirded out that he didn't have any tubes or wires attached to him.

When I was pregnant, one day at work I started to freak out about all the "what ifs" that could happen to my unborn babe. Illness, pain, injury, evil. I eventually had to remind myself that most children are absolutely healthy. Most babies never have to go to the hospital and most parents never have to live out this nightmare.

We just have to believe that we are doing the best we can do as parents and providing our children with the safest possible environment and leave it at that. I pray over my daughter every day and follow all the precautions I can and then I choose to give my worries up as best I can because there is nothing more I can do.
