Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Wish I had known about BLW...

I really wish I had known about this months ago. I just came across it the other day and did some research on it. I really like the idea but I think it's to late to try and teach LO now. He has a bad gag reflex and he sometimes will vomit it gets so bad. I think if we had started BLW first his gagging wouldn't have been as bad. Now I'm super careful what I feed him. I feel like he's learning to eat on his own very slowly because of all pureed food and him not being used to more solid foods.

Oh well... there's always baby #2 :)

If you use this method please leave a comment?advice about your experience, thanks!

  • LO is almost 7 months and it's awesome. She gagged a lot the first couple days and now not so much. It's nice to enjoy a family meal, however, it is messy. Extremely messy. That's part of the fun, of course, but for some it's a negative. It also requires being organized because you do have to prepare healthy safe meals all the time. No last minute McDonald's takeout for baby! I find it hard some times to stay on top of it, but I often make extra portions for baby and freeze them so I have something quick for the days I don't end up cooking healthy.

  • Yep not too late.  In fact, in Ripley (is it Rapley?) Baby Led Weaning Book she talks about how you can still do it and discusses some stumbling blocks you may run into.  I highly recommend you looking into the bbook.

  • Yeah, you can totally start now.

We do a mix of BLW and purees.  If he doesn't want to eat the purees, no big deal.  I don't force it.  But I often give him big chunks of food and let him go to town.  He isn't a super big eater, even at almost 9 months - no matter the method.

  • We love it. It's not too late to start it now and do a mix. It was slow going at first with lots of gagging but it never seemed to bother him. We are only 4 weeks in and all of the sudden he is really eating quite a bit.  It's a fun family thing, and my diet has improved tremendously because he really does better when we sit down and eat te same foods with him.  Only issue is that he has already learned to feed the dog and he's not even 7 months!

  • Agreed. We and the dog are having lots of fun! So far meal prep hasnt changed for us but we cook our own meals anyways. Try it if you are interested, nothing to lose! The e-book was only $10!
  • You can still start now.  We are doing a combination.  LO gets oatmeal in the morning and then if we eat dinner while he is still up, he gets BLW.  Tonight, he really enjoyed playing with turkey and broccoli.  He did gag a little, but he figured it out!  It is a nice way to keep him entertained while we eat since he could get pretty cranky so close to bedtime.
  • I learned about it with DD because someone asked me if that was what I was doing here on TB.  It wasn't but I ran off to learn about it and we stopped spoon feeding immediately.  With her I was pretty strict about not spoon feeding.  She took off and it was amazing.  We did BLW with DS too.  I will say that I spoon fed him when ever it was convenient and it didn't cause any issues.  He feeds himself great and eats full meals.

  • Thank you SO much! I am going to look into getting the book but for know I'll read the link above. I'm just afraid that he'll gag and then vomit. It's just so much of a mess when he vomits. He does it often enough for me to not want to feed him solid foods.

Does it talk about that in the book?
