Do your kids get on the treadmill?

H bought me a treadmill for Christmas. It was about $1600, not cheap.

Over Christmas, when we were in the room, the kids (nieces and s-kids) jumped on it, and had it going way too fast. So I let them know it's not a toy, slow it down and eventually told them to get off - that was enough.

SS-8 also told us that his BM won't let him exceed 0.5 on their treadmill at home. So I told him that the same rule would apply here.

So we just heard SS going extremely fast on the treadmill - without anyone else being in the room nor did he ever ask if he could get on it. This frustrated me, and I told H to tell the kids it's not a toy, and they don't need to be on it.

Am I alone in this? I did an online search, and it said that kids shouldn't be on it unsupervised. So I could live with allowing them to be on it if we watched, but I can tell we're off to the wrong start when he jumped on it without permission after being at the house for only an hour.

Re: Do your kids get on the treadmill?

  • A treadmill is not a toy we don't allow our children to play on it at all.  The 13 year old is allowed to use it with permission only

  • No it's not a toy. Kids can be injured on therm.

  • He should not be on it without supervision and permission. You need to outline consequences for when he breaks either of those rules.

  • We have an elliptical and the kids aren't allowed on it at any time. We felt that there was too much grey area saying supervised b/c thier definition isn't what ours is and I could see them trying to bend the rules. "Oh, but you were in the other room.....we're supervised" Huh? Umm, no.  Its not a toy, they could get hurt or hurt eachother.

  • No he should not be allowed on it, it's an expensive piece of equipment and not a toy.

On the other hand it's a novelty and new and fun. Not exactly surprising a child would try to get on it.

Set a rule, explain it and enforce it. You may have to enforce it more than once, afterall they are kids!!!

  • My parents have a treadmill.  I don't let SD (9) on it at all.  She used to get on it, but would turn it up way to fast or get on it without shoes on so I told her no more.  My parents have said it doesn't bother them if she is on it, but I can't afford to replace it should she break it, and I really can't afford a broken leg/arm/face and the drama that would ensue should that happen.

  • I ended up on these boards accidentally (clicked the wrong board) but had to read this post.  My son got on and turned on my aunts treadmill one day while at her house.  We were in the room but looking away.  We turned as we heard the sound of it turning on and turned just in time to see him flying off the treadmill and slamming into a wall.  We were so lucky he wasn't hurt.  That said, NO, they cannot play on the treadmill.  She now keeps it unplugged when not in use. My parents (who my kids are at almost daily) keep theirs unplugged AND shut off.  That way even if my kids plugged it in it wouldn't turn on.

  • No you are right it is not a toy. My step daughter while in custody of the BM was playing on her tredmill fell off and her hand got caught on the side of it and it ripped part of her pinky finger nail and part of her skin aroud it off. It bled for a long time. She was around you SS age too. For some reason at that age they think its fun to play on tremill. At our house they all try to and I shut the down. lol.

  • Does BM allow SS to use the treadmill unsupervised? Regardless, I think you're right to require adult supervision. Set the rule and punishment and stick to it. Most gyms and fitness centers won't allow kids under 13 to use the equipment - even with adult supervision.

  • Not only no, but HELL NO! We learned our lesson the hard way: Warning if you have a weak stomach!

DS19, then 4.5, played on ours one day when I was in the shower. He figured out where we hid the pin, put the pin in, turned it on, inclined it up and was going down it like a slide. Ours was an older model that had a guard on the back near the belt. I heard him screaming and jumped out and ran for him. He had gotten his foot caught between the belt and the guard, the belt was going over his foot! He had a 3rd degree friction burn, spent 2 weeks at a hospital in Indy having to have the wound cleaned, then surgery to reattach his muscles and tendons before a skin graft. The belt took the skin off all the way to the bone. He still has the scar and sensitivity in that foot. He has not stepped foot on a treadmill since that happened.

I also had a child in my daycare play on the one they had at home. He came in with burn marks on his arms and nose from falling on it.

I would put a hard and fast rule on it now. NO KIDS ON IT.
