Re: what did you do with your infant carseat?

  • Some people will buy used ones. Especially if they are short on money. As long as they are not expired, you could try to sell them. You can also reassure the people buying them that they weren't in any accidents and were stored properly after use assuming that's all true of course.

Otherwise, if you plan on having any more before the expiration date on the carseat, save them! Lol. I don't know if this is a possibility for you or not.

ETA: I believe Toys R Us or BRU may buy them back. Not sure how that works though.

  • I cut the straps off ours and wrote expired: do not use on it...because it had.

    Some places recycle? I think.

  • My SIL is borrowing mine. She just had a baby on Christmas day.

  • Ours went to another preemie mom.  We had 2 bases and she took the seat.  She had twins, so she just had to buy 1 more.

  • I'm a huge advocate for car seat safety. I hate hate hate seeing seats for sale. I always tell people NOT to buy them used. It's very irresponsible IMO. Not saying you are irresponsible, but there are people out there than try and sell seats after they've been in a crash and still look okay, but aren't. Even if yours have never been in a car accident and are totally fine, if something happens in it with the new owners, they could potentially come after you. I wouldn't risk it.

I would try to donate them to a fire house or hospital so they can use them for car seat safety demonstrations.

They have a buyback event a couple of times a year - you take your old baby gear back and they give you a 25% coupon towards selected other baby gear. I've never done it, but considered it. I know things like strollers and pack n plays and car seats are included, but not sure what else. I don't think you have to purchase the same thing that you trade in (ie, if you trade in a car seat, I think you could use the coupon on a stroller).

  • Yes, BRU does a trade-in event twice a year.  The last one was August, I believe.  You can apply the coupon to a lot of things.

We let our friends borrow DD's carseat and since it was still within the expiration date we used it for DS and now the same friends are using it for their #2 coming in the late spring.

  • I sold mine to a child resale store. They can check to make sure there's no recalls and such, so people might feel more comfortable buying from there. It was gently used, so I figured someone else could use it.

  • we aren't having any more so I'm giving mine to a friend. it's not expired and never been in a crash, I bought it new, so it should be fine.

  • I passed mine on to a friend who had a baby shortly after me.

I wanted it used before it expired. (I bought it with my first which was a still birth and saved it for my second and used 8 months..so it only had two years left before it expired).

Worked great for both of us. It was in brand new good shape, but I wasn't comfortable selling to a stranger so I gave it to a friend who knew could trust me and save some cash.

  • I used mine for  my second and now it is sitting in the garage.  I don't know what to do with besides throw it away.  We're done having kids and I don't need any other baby gear, so the trade in event is pointless for us.

  • If you've taken care of them 100% correctly and you can sell them in good conscience by all means sell them.

If you are not 100% sure that you've cared for them 100% correctly take the covers off and sell those, cut the straps and trash them.

  • I'm guessing you aren't having anymore kids?  We just boxed our's up and stored them for the next baby--we bought everything gender neutral so we could.  I personally wouldn't buy a used carseat, but I know some people would.  You could also try selling to a consignment store.

This! It should totally be illegal to sell used carseats. I would never ever consider buying one used. I'm not saying you didn't care for it properly but there are too many people who don't. Using bleach on a carseat can damage it, checking it on an airplane etc. There are too many factors.

We are saving our infant seat for a future baby (as long as it doesn't expire) and when it's time to get rid of it we'll cut out the straps and dispose of it properly.

  • I used mine for both kids and it will expire at the end of this year.  If I'm on the ball enough to trade it in at a TRU/BRU trade-in event or give it to a friend who needs baby gear to trade in, I'll do that.

  • gave them to friends.  i know i cared for them 100% correctly so i didnt have any qualms about passing them on (they were only used for 1 baby each)
