1st Trimester

10 weeks and bleeding

I am 10 weeks and this morning I woke up and went to the bathroom. When I wiped it wasn't enough to reach my underwear but was bright red and had clots. I wiped again and there was no more.

I called my doctor who said to come in if it gets any worse. I waited an hour and wiped again and it was brown. Now it has been 3 hours since and nothing. My family is begging me to go to the emergency room but it seemed minor to me.

Would you go in for this type of thing?
I think it is normal but the family thinks it means impending miscarriage.

Any thoughts?

Re: 10 weeks and bleeding

  • If you were having a miscarriage you'd probably be cramping and have a lot more blood. If your doctor isn't worried, I'd try to relax!

  • I'd ask your doctor to do an ultrasound anways to put your mind at ease. I had a miscarriage last August and there was a ton of bleeding and it didn't stop. But this time around my doctor said not to worry unless it's a lot. However, I would still want to double check.

Thank you, I have no cramps or any pain. My doctor didn't seem worried.
  • What you're describing is spotting and isn't cause for alarm. Only having a couple of spots when wiping, but nothing in your underwear in between and what sounds like old blood (brown) might be alarming to you but, like your doctor has already said, isn't something you have to worry about and can be very normal. Unless you have severe cramping pain accompanied by heavy period-like bleeding, you're likely fine.

I can go to the emergency room since it is a weekend but my doctor warned me with the flu being so bad in my county that risking it was not worth it. I do get my first ultrasound Monday.

Thanks. I figured there would be cramps but I don't have them. I feel fine.
  • I would not go to the emergency room unless you started filling a pad an hour.

  • I'm also at 10 weeks and had some dark brown blood on my pantiliner and a tiny bit of tissue discharge just two days ago. Later in the day I had  little more dark brown blood plus a little bit more stringy-looking tissue discharge. I started reading forums to see what other women have experienced, and since I wasn't feeling any abdominal cramps or pain, I decided not to worry too much. I do have a doctor's follow-up appointment in 3 days, so that is also why I'm not freaking out too badly! I hope you are doing well, I wish you the best! :)

  • With baby #2 I had a blood clot visible on u/s that they warned me a few times may cause some spotting but it was small. You may have just passed a clot like what I had.

  • Yeah, its always best to go by your instincts paired with the doctors advice. That's how I've gotten through these past almost 2 yrs with my daughter. Your instincts tell you its ok, your doctor tells you its ok.. plus you have the first ultrasound tomorrow :

In my first pregnancy I had light bleeding very very early I'm guessing 3rd or 4th week and also around the 10th week. It was fine. Remember, its much more sensitive "down there" now that you're pregnant.

  • I had a chemical pregnancy last june...

I wasn't even late and the cramps and bleeding were 10x worse than any period I ever had. The cramps made me cry. As long as your not cramping/bleeding together, I think its normal. Just take it easy and prop your legs up for a little bit. Hope you feel better soon!!!

  • if it turned brown you have nothing to worry about
