DD is scared of public bathrooms

We potty trained DD about 2 months ago and she's doing very well. But she is so scared of public bathrooms. For someone who is newly potty trained she has a bladder of steel and can hold it a long long time.

Well, today we were at the mall for 4 hours and we visited 3 different bathrooms and she wouldn't pee in any of them. We even went to Nordstrom where their bathrooms are very very nice and comfy and have couches, etc. No dice. She hates the loud flushing noise and the fact that many of the doors bang shut. She clings to me and just cries. So after multiple attempts, we headed home and the poor thing had an accident in the car.

I'm thinking of getting a travel potty.  Any suggestions on which one to get?

  • Stick a pad of post-it notes in your purse.  Place one over the sensor on the auto-flushers.  Take it off after she's well away from the toilet.

I love this one. I have the reusable liner for it and its awesome. It fits right in my bag and I can use it as a seat ontop a toilet also.

DS has a hard time peeing in public but he does find automatic flushing toilets to be hilarious.  He would rather hold it til he gets home.

I would try that but she hates the sound of the other toilets flushing too.

this is what we have and it rules! It has gone everywhere with us. I use bue diaper sacks that I got from Wal-mart. They require a bit of stretching but it works and they are dirt cheap. I used the sacks that came with it and DD refused to sit on it unless I took the little absorbent liner out.....

DD was scared to death of any big toilet when we first trained at 26 months. She actually progressed to using the big potty much quicker than I thought she would although currently we are reluctant again for some reason,

And definitely carry post it notes for the automatic flushers. It works really well.

and when she first PT I would have the travel potty all set up in the car and if she had to god would run out to the car. Sort of a pain but better than having accidents.

  • I think the travel potty sounds like a great solution. My kids haven't had issues with public restrooms, but I did. I actually still don't like them. I don't think I used a bathroom in school until I started sports in highschool. My mom said I would hold it for hours. I wouldn't stop asking her to try every so often though. It is better to go than hold it in if she can get over her fears eventually.

I have a 4 year old who still won't pee in any place that has automatic flushers.  Made for a rough time at the airport when we had a 4 hour delay...  He has a bladder of steel though.  No advice. Let me know if you figure it out.
  • The Potette is incredible! We'd duck in dressing rooms for the same loud noise reasons. I can't tell you how many times my kiddos have used it in the back of our Pilot too :)

  • DS freaks out at automatic flushing, doors slamming, and god forbid there is a dryer in there.  The only solution I have is that I know where the family bathrooms are (for example, Target) or quiet out of the way ones.  I also prepare him for what sounds he might hear when he is in there.  He does have sensory issues so finding a way to go in public is a battle.  I feel your pain.
