Income : Annual Salary

After reading the post about spending freezes I realized that it seems a lot of you make some good money. Answer if you want or even just an estimate.

What do you do? what does DH do? What is your/DH's annual salary?

Maybe its because we are  a single income family but I feel we are in the lower class compared to most of you ladies.

Re: Income : Annual Salary

  • I'm a SAHM, and my DH makes less than 50,000 a year, but he has a good job that he loves. Considering our area, we don't really need to make that much. Our home is under 100,000, our debts are paid for the most part, and we have savings. I would love to have a larger budget, but we are fine being where we're at financially.

  • Ha! Don't worry, I feel the same way MrsGabus!  MH is a Corrections Officer at a local jail, I currently work in billing at a Trucking company.  Together we make between 38-45K/year. We also live in a very low income area with a low cost of living (We bought our home for 35K).

I am a veterinarian, dh is an IT manager. I make 250k a year (I have a specialty in equine health so that helps) he makes 200k. BUT I am still paying off vet school and we live in a pricey ass area (dc).

HOLY CRAP Can i move in?? lol

  • I am a school psychologist and MH is a structural engineer. Together we make about $130K/year. Our house is in the low $300Ks now and we live in a more expensive area. Our new house that we're building is about $230 and is in an area that is lower cost of living compared to where we are now. Just in paychecks, we save about $1K/month right now. We live a comfortable life and do pay attention to what we are spending, but not real strictly.

I'm a teacher. I make 75,000 per year. DH is a grocery store manager. He makes about 60,000. We live in an extremely expensive area. We are poor folk compared to many people on Long Island.

I never knew you were a teacher! What do you teach?

  • Oh you'll feel much better after you read this. I'm a lower level manager at an environmental non profit, and DH is in charge of circulation for the city library system. We each make just under $50K. I have a BA in sustainability and DH has a AA in library technology and a BA in Art History. He'll be starting an MLS (master's in library science) soon. Our combined nearly 6 figure salary would go much further if either of us had any money sense, and if would pay attention to what is flowing in and out of our account, but we own a small house in a nice suburb, and keep our overhead extremely low (electricity bill is usually under $30 etc.)

  • We made around 100k combined last year, probably more like 120k this year. I still feel poor. We live in a townhouse, drive older cars, we don't take fancy trips or have expensive habits, we don't eat out very often. I guess student loans suck, but really where does the rest go? I need to work on a budget and being more frugal.Whenever our house sells it has been on the market for 6 months, sigh... we are going to move and I'll become a SAHM. MH probably makes around 70k and I'm probably around 50k. He is an engineer and I am a social worker. Our current house is listed around 180k and when we get a new house we'll look around the same or a little less since I'll be staying at home.

In Iowa 50,000 is definitely a decent income. Our living expenses are so much cheaper compared to other areas. Our house was well under $100,000.

I know how you feel, mrsgabus. I'm pretty sure we make significantly less than others. To make over $100,000 a year where I live though you would be considered wealthy.  Dh would like us to make more, but I don't feel like life is a contest about who can accumulate the most wealth and coolest stuff. I am okay right now where we are at. He would like more cool stuff. I am by no means saying that if you make a lot of money or if that is your goal that it's bad thing, it's just not what I am looking for out of life right now. If making money makes you happy, by all means, do it!

     ETA-

I am an operations manager at a major retailer and dh works for custom pumping company (small business). Combined we make between $75,000 and $80,000 (I think).

  • I SAHM. My DH is an electrical engineer and makes just over $90,000 a year. He makes a lot for the area we live in but considering we own 2 houses, have a lot of debt from various reasons AND DH co signed for his ex girlfriends college loans and we are now stuck paying them we aren't doing well at all. We have no savings and live paycheck to paycheck. It's really depressing.

I teach 3rd grade. I've been on a leave being a SAHM for a bit, but I head back in 3 weeks. I'm a nervous wreck!!

Assuming you've been teaching for a decent amount of time before SAH, I bet it'll come back to you quickly!! GL getting back into the groove and "meeting" your class. :o)

I think it is hard to compare incomes without also looking at cost of living too. Here is a map that shows median income.

  • DH is a union laborer/ general construction guy in Manhattan. He makes between 85,000 and 90,000 depending on overtime. We live in a somewhat high cost of living area, so doesn't stretch as much as it could. Our tiny 750 square foot house is about $150,000. I SAH now, but when I was working as a medical assistant I made $34,500. Things were definitely more laid back financially back then. We get by ok now, but don't have a ton of extra money for luxuries.

Your DH sounds like a Saint.

Yeah, he's pretty great. He tries so hard, but life keeps beating us down. If I went out and had to put the kids in daycare, it would take most of my salary. There's no point to that. Right now we are surviving just fine, but man I'm so sick of surviving. I'm jealous of all you guys who can save money. I'm so proud of how hard my DH works for us. I just wish it wasn't so hard.

  • I'm a teacher and make 66,000. MH is in software sales. His income fluctuates from year to year, but it is 200,000 give or take another 20K. I also teach group fitness classes which brings in about another 15K. We live in a suburb of NYC, so it's very expensive. We are not well off for the area in which we live.

  • I'm a SAHM with a small little biz that really only helps us with major tax write offs and fun money for me and the kid. DH probably makes 100k/year, and we have a lot of "non-liquid" assets such as farm land, etc.

I don't feel rich, but I feel like we are okay.

  • I felt the same as you, gabus. A lot of those saving goals were higher than our entire annual income last year! DH is a landscape architect for a major national company but still only makes about 26,000. I wasn't working but when I am I teach preschool and make around 40,000 at two jobs.

  • DH is Enlisted Military and I stay at home. This year we will make less because they gave the mil 1.3 increase, but social security went up..making it less a paycheck. He is deployed and will get separation pay, hazard duty pay and all that. The extra money will be nice, but with training included will be gone from us for over a year total. Military isn't paid a lot, but housing and medical is completely covered for us.

  • I SaH. DH has his own little video production company. We are doing ok. He made about 70k last year and from what I can see by doing the books we are going to make about the same this year.
When I did work, I made about 30k per year. I do small photo jobs too and work for FiL if he needs help in his lab, so that brings in about 5k10k and I still do it.

We are doing well. Ottawa is pretty expensive though. Out townhouse was 213k. On the other hand, the market here is pretty stable and that is a good thing.

  • I'm in construction marketing and make 40k a year. I also carry our benefits because my company's are much better than MH's. He's a project manager for a general contractor and makes 65k. This last year, we made more than that because he switched jobs and got a severance package so his income was higher than normal. Our house is currently worth 195k which is more than what we bought it at. I feel like we're stuck in the middle in our area. There are very very wealthy people, but there are people who make a lot less than us. Our COL isn't really high from what I understand. I need to check out Penny's link.

  • We are very lucky. With dh's new job and this relocation, we will be very, very comfortable. It's amazing to me that in just 10 years, through his hard work and drive to always push for something better, he's more than quadrupled the base salary from his first banking job out of college. And that is before any potential bonuses or incentives. We are also moving from an average COL area, the midatlantic, to a lower COL area in TX.

However, I have a ton of student loans and with DS's daycare and a car payment it wipes out $1800 a mo right off. Luckily our mortgage is really cheap.

  • Wow, looking at the other teachers' salaries I am getting ripped off! I have a Masters and only make $32,000 a year. DH is a probation officer and makes around $30,000 a year. He has awesome insurance though. His, DD's and my insurance is fully paid through his job. So that's worth a lot of money. Our house is less than $100,000 too and we live in a low cost area as well. We have been horrible with money though, but we want to start putting more in savings this year.

ETA: I realize the other teachers who posted live in areas where COL is more, but I never realized how much less teachers make in my state.

  • We're both substitute teachers.  If we could get permanent job, we'd be in good shape.  As it is, combined we make less than $50 000.  And since I haven't been working much so that I can be home with Lily, it's been well under that.

  • We live in a very low COL area. It looked like from the map penny posted that the median income for my area is about 20 to 30k. Our combined income is about 100k. DH is a teacher and makes around 32k and I'm a speech pathologist and make about 70k. We have a minimal mortgage payment, but we both have student loans. In addition, we owe my mom about 25k. My mom actually just told us to use the money to start a college fund for the kids, so that's a relief. I don't save as much as I would like too, but we live VERY comfortably...probably a little frivolously. I'm hoping after maternity leave, we can really crack down on savings.

That makes me want to cry. Not only are the home prices insane, about 350k for a 3 br on a half acre, but they kill you with the taxes. We often dream of living in a lower COL area.

My cousin lives in N Babylon and she pays a ton in taxes too. I live less than 2 hrs from her and we pay $6000+ in property tax alone. $300,000 was what we paid for our 3 bdr house on .25 acres. We pay through the roof for utilities too. $100+ a month just to run basic electric, and we don't have electric heat! Sometimes I wish we could move, but our house isn't worth sh!t right now and we would lose too much.

  • H works at a grocery store and I am a full-time student.

We live in a higher than average COL area in CA (our city is 37% higher than  the national average according to Penny's link), and we make between 50 and 75% of the area's median income.

We are not comfortable.  We don't make enough to save most months.  However, we have good cheap health insurance, our rent is lower than average for the area, we have no car payments, and no debt.

My future earning potential is a pretty wide range, so we'll see.  I'll leave school with below average student loan debt (about $15,000).

  • Clearly, I need to move... the lowest price you can pay for a house where I am is $700,000, and you're not getting much for that.

  • I am an Instructional Designer working in the technology field.  MH is a gym teacher at a middle school. Combined we make about $165,000 +/- my bonuses. We live in the mid-atlantic.  Rather average.  As a comparison:  A salary of $165,000 in Wilmington, Delaware should increase to$273,221 in New York, New York

The last few years have been good to us since my company was acquired and our stock options bought out at almost 2x what they were worth.  Without that, we would not have been able to reduce our debt and buy a bigger home.

Now that those benefits are gone, we live well on what we make and I probably spend way too much...  but we do ok.

We still have our old home which has an under water mortgage so we rent it out.  Sadly, our renter sucks.  But some money coming in is better than none.  I'm just worried about what will happen when baby 2 comes and needs daycare.  We cannot afford 4 mortgages (2 for homes and 2 for daycare).

  • We live in a high cost of living area. I make around $90k as a program analyst for the federal govt  and DH makes about $25k working in logistics for IKEA. He was doing some personal training on the side, but has started school (to be a phys ed teacher and coach). We live in a tiny $300K house. I could always do with more money, but as we stand now, we live comfortably and although we can't afford many vacations or expensive things, we don't have the time or desire for them.

Our goal this year is to be able to save anything (aside from our retirement that comes right our of our checks).
