Baby Showers

No idea where she gets it...?

Hello! I'm not sure if I have introduced myself here or not... But if not, hello! I'm a FTM and super excited! I'm only 13.5 weeks and this is a part of my frustration.

I got an email from my mom asking "so do I throw you a shower? It could be a shower by mail where people send you gifts, but only AFTER you register at Babies R Us and Target..." Ummm... Wait, what? I realize that I live in Virginia, my parents live in Mississippi, and have other family in Missouri, Oregon, and California... And I am honored that she is thinking of a shower for me, but come on. Shower by mail?

I politely declined. I'm not sure where she even got the idea?

And, obviously she has been checking out the registries to know that I hadn't registered. I'm only 13.5 weeks. I know she is excited, but this isn't her first grand kid. This is 4.

Sorry. Thanks for letting me vent. I'm just dumbfounded.

Re: No idea where she gets it...?

  • My mother is the same way. I just had her sixth grandchild in novemeber 2011 and I will be having her seventh in April and she is crazy. She went out and bought an entire pink outfit because she just knew I was having a girl,(even though their has not been a girl born to my fiances family in like 70 years, just a bunch of boys being born and marring girls who give birth to more boys). Anyways she bought this outfit way before they could determine sex and wouldn't you know it I am having another boy. Mom's are just kinda crazy like that. Sometimes living close to her drives me crazy but I couldn't imagine living far away either so I just deal with her.

  • I've never heard of that, either. I think that if people want to buy you a gift they'll ask her where/if you're registered or maybe for your address to send you a gift card.

    Exactly.
  • Ash, thanks! I know she's excited, I just can't figure out where she would get the idea or think its even remotely ok. I doubt she would actually go through with doing a mail in thing, even if I was on board. I'm sure she just wants to be helpful and has no idea how to.. Just struck me as funny and wrong. Thanks for letting me vent!
  • The way your mom is acting is exactly why we haven't told our families yet. I am scared about how overboard she is going to get. Thank God my dad is good at reigning her in. Good luck!

Hahah I'm right there with you. Obviously I told my mom at 12 weeks, but I had been seriously considering hiding it from her longer. I know tht sounds bad, but she tends to get a little ridiculous.
Good luck with your announcement to your mom!

Lol! My mom did the same thing with my first pregnancy (last girl in DH's family was about 50 years before that - maybe more) and I told her I knew I was having a boy. She bought a pink dress anyway. This dress has been hanging in a random closet in my house for the last 10 years - when we found out this one is a girl, one of the first things I said was, "At least now I can use that dang dress!" :)

  • My MIL threw me a "shower by mail" after my friend, who was supposed to throw me a low key (in person) shower, cancelled because she wasn't happy we wouldn't watch their dog again after he bite our next door neighbor's 2 year.  My MIL was seriously more upset about my baby shower being cancelled than I was.  She did this as a surprise, well, kinda.  My mom spilled the beans and told me that while she loved me, she thought it was disrespectful of my feelings about baby showers, and that MIL (and all the people who sent mail shower gifts) had already given us so much and were so generous, that it wasn't necessary.

While really nice of MIL, SUPER awkward.  And, just to make it funny, two of our neighbors threw us a baby shower after our little guy was born, sooo in the end I did get a baby shower, which then made the whole "shower by mail" thing even more awkward.  I have NO IDEA where she got this idea either.

  • I think sometimes people need to accept that not everyone practices etiquette. It's just something you can't control. You were in your moms thoughts and that counts for something. But I think you replied right with declining.

  • HaHaHaHaHa... This made me laugh so hard. We are team green and my mil bought a girl dress two she is a mom to all boys. She asked if I wanted to take it home just in case it is a girl. I had this image in my head that it would be in a closet for years. I told her I was superstitious and didn't want either gender specific clothing in house. She kept it thank goodness.
