returning to work next week

Is anyone else returning to work at 6 weeks?

I'm really nervous. I didn't leave ds1 until he was about a year old b/c I got laid off while pregnant with him. So, this whole leaving a baby who can't even hold his head up thing is freaking me out. I spent 3 days crying last week after work told me I can't use my PTO to have more time with my baby. I'm having a hard time coming to terms with it.

To make matters worse, my MIL tells me I need to ask the daycare if there's been an outbreak of the flu there and ask the sitter if she's been exposed to anyone with the flu the sitter drops the baby off at daycare because DH and I work at 4am. This flusters me. What does she expect me to do from there? I have to go to work regardless. We have a very stringent attendance policy. I'm worried, of course, but I can't be in 2 places at once. Its not as though it was my choice to return to work this early.

Re: returning to work next week

  • I'm supposed to go back to work at the 21st...which is actually 5 weeks post partum for me, I 'supposed' to because I still have a little extra time and I'm considering taking it...

I'm a 1st grade teacher and my son will be going to the daycare that the school runs. He will exposed to all sorts of germs between what I bring home from school and what the other babies have. He will be just over 1 month, and I'm terrified of what he might catch. But, they keep the infant room really clean...and unless I quit my job I don't really have another choice.

  • I am not a fan of day care at 6 weeks mmyself. Just asking, but it sounds like you are planning to have a sitter for the 4am until day care starts portion. Is it possible to have the sitter watch your LO full time for a few weeks? Am betting it would cost more, but if feasible financially, you might feel a little more comfortable going back to work.

Also, is there a possibility that your dr might extend your leave time with a medical reason? Sometimes even a week could help. Or could you start back part time for a week to help you transition in?

Your MIL is probably trying to be helpful, however she is just making it more difficult and she has probably forgotten the crazed hormones post baby. If the day care is a liscenced day care, they probably already have a procedure for informing of communicable diseases when they show up ... like a phone call, note on a board, or letter home. Just ask how they will communicate such things. I was an in case of emergency person for a friend's child when he was in day care and am for one of our neighbors' kids since I work closer to where we live and he goes to school compared to his parents. Would be difficult if the emergency was midday, but would get it figured out. Sometimes just having a back up plan helps ease the worries. GL with the transition back!

No, I can't go back part time. They're making everyone work mandatory 10hrs Over time this week. I almost think they would laugh if I asked to come back part time. Its the busy season in healthcare which is why I'm not being allowed to use any of my PTO, not for at least 2 months.

The original plan was to have a babysitter all day, but we couldn't find a sitter for all day. Our sitter has classes to go to during the day, so we had to arrange for a daycare and settle for just drop offs.

I keep getting side eyed for sending the baby to daycare by all the relatives and for having a sitter. :
  • I go back next week on Wed (7 weeks). I worry too regarding the flu. But I'm with you there's not much choice regarding sending LO to daycare. They can't exactly stay home alone :) I'm crossing my fingers that our LO won't catch anything. I'm breast feeding which seemed to help with our last.

On top of that she was already exposed to the flu at home (DH) and so far hasn't shown any symptoms. Honestly I've seen viruses come and go through daycare with our first daughter. It could be present for weeks to months is one class or another. You can't exactly keep her out of daycare for that. luckily our daycare is pretty good at catching sick kids and sending them home asap to avoid spreading as much as possible.

I look at it this way LO is not going to be sucking/sharing toys at this point and really should only have contact with her teachers who I'm hoping have had flu shots.

I honestly have more of a fear of bringing something home and giving it to her when she decided to smear her face on my shirt/shoulder. (I work at a hospital). Sigh the things we worry about.

You wouldn't be a mamma if you didn't worry that our job :)

  • If the relatives are doing that, they'd better be stepping up and volunteering to watch LO for you offering up their availability and be willing to follow your schedule and expectations of care for LO. If they are not, they truly don't get it and are ____ insert colorful word here.

Does your employeer provide day care?

No they don't. I wish they did and think they should because there's not a daycare open at 4am. The earliest we found was 630.

The relatives that are giving us a hard time about it, don't live here. They were visiting over the holidays. We only have DHs brother and SIL here and they definitely don't want to watch kids. MIL keeps saying how she doesn't want her grandson in daycare and she doesn't know if they'll really change/feed him when he needs it... sigh I don't think she's trying to make me feel guilty on purpose... but she is definitely making me feel guilty.

She did suggest we drive 50 miles to DHs grandma's house and have her watch him for 2 days... and stay there in her tiny 1 bedroom apt. Needless to say, we politely told her that wouldn't work.
