DS just went for his 30 month well visit and the dr. said that his blood work from the hospital said that he's anemic. He said I need to give him an additional iron supplement of 60mg of elemental iron per day. He acted like this was something I could get over then counter, but the pharmacist at CVS said I needed a prescription. Has anyone had any experience with this? Can I get it some where else? Also, how concerned should I be that DS was anemic? I was caught off guard by the diagnosis and didn't think to ask any questions. TIA

Re: Anemic toddler...?
DD is anemic and is on iron therapy. It's liquid ferrous sulfate, look for that. Not all pharmacies have it, so ask the pedi if there is a specific place you can get it. It tastes HORRID so be prepared for battles at the daily medicine time. Mixing it with food or drink doesn't work for us, it is overpowering. What works for us is giving DD a popsicle. That is what the nurse recommended to help numb her mouth so she doesn't taste the iron as much.
Thanks! DS has been a champ at taking medicine, so hopefully he will take this without too much trouble. Knock on wood
When LO is already anemic a multivitamin won't be enough to get their levels back up. If you do give LO a multivitamin on top of the iron therapy, make sure it's not one with iron because that can cause iron overdose.
Most children's multi's do not have iron I've found. The regular flintstones don't, you have to get the ones that say "plus iron."
Yes, he was just in the hospital. They ran a standard blood panel in him in the hospital and his pedi told us today that it showed that he was anemic. The pedi didn't say anything about the two being related.
I thought the dr. told me to do a multivitamin with iron and do an iron supplement. I guess I will call on Monday to verify the instructions.
