Baby Names

Help find a name that can fit in, but be different

Hi,

We are expecting a baby boy this February and we need some serious help with names!

My hubby and I are both Indian (as in the dot, not the feather).

We want the baby to have an Indian-ish name that is easy to pronounce by non-indians.  We have come up with a couple of names and wanted to get some input from all of you out there.

Can you please rank the names below in order of preference, and let us know what the first few things you think of when you see the name.  Any kind of associations, or thoughts that come to mind.

Also, any other name suggestions are VERY much appreciated.

Names are as follows (in alphabetical order):

Amar

Arian

Dilan

Nathan

Raj

Yash

Thank you all so much!!!

    I like Amar and Raj.

Arian reminds me of Aryan Nation and white supremacy.

Dilan would get misspelled a lot, as Dylan is a popular name already.

Nathan is nice, but NMS. Just kind of "blah" to me.

I agree with this, especially the bolded.

  • My favorite is amar. I agree with the above posts. I personally like Nathan but when I suggested it to his and he said it was "overly white" which is odd to me but that's what he thinks.
  • To me Nathan is not Indian at all, but I do LOVE it!  (DS will be Nathan.)  Dilan - I would think it is pronounced the same as Dylan.  Which I like but again, sounds very American.

So that leaves Amar, Arian, Raj and Yash.  Raj - honestly I think of the guy on Big Bang Theory.  For some reason, no real basis I'm not a fan of Amar.  Arian and Yash I had never heard of and I like both.  Arian sounds strong and Yash sounds like a hipster.

I also like Ankit (not on your list, but I thought I would suggest).

This...Arian really would not work well in my opinion.

    This made me giggle! Anyway...

Amar - Very nice, strong name.

Arian - Makes me think of Aryan, which is bad enough but on someone who is Indian it seems even worse.

Dilan - I'm guessing this is an Indian name, not a bad spelling of Dylan/Dillon. However, I think other people would think that's what it was.

Nathan - A little boring compared to your other names.

    Raj - Love.

    Yash - Not a fan.

  • Wow thanks for all the replies!

Dilan & Nathan also have Indian Meanings.

Dilan means from the heart and Nathan is a name for Krishna the hindu god.

Any other name suggestions are very welcome....never thought this would be so hard!

  • I like Amar the best.

this is what my uncle always says. I am always worried he would say this to the wrong person, but I am glad to see people answering your question, not bugging you about this! sorry, no help with names.

Dilan--I  think that this is an Indian name that is also familiar to non-Indian Americans (your qualifications)

Raj--my guess this is the most well known Indian name to most non-Indians. Easy to pronounce, too.

Nathan--I love this name (DS's middle name), but had no idea it had any Indian connection.

Amar--less familiar, but easy to pronounce

Yash--I fear he would be teased.  It's a very unfamiliar name, at least to me.
Arian--white surpremacy connotation as PP said. You asked for additional suggestions--I also love the name Dev.  Also, our Indian neighbors named their son Maddox, in part because it could be easily pronounced by their Indian relatives.Hope that helps--good luck!

  • I like Amar and Raj (or Rajesh). I prefer Arya to Arian.

    Other suggestions:

    Rakesh

    Mukesh

    Dev

    Kiran

    Suresh

    Vik/Vikram

  • I've always loved the name Raj! Amar is my second favorite of your list.

I agree with everyone's assessment of Arian. Nathan wouldn't really accomplish the "be different" part, since it's pretty popular (I think it's in the top 50, if not the top 25). Dilan would always be mispronounced, which isn't necessarily an argument against it, but something to consider. I like Yash, but I foresee pronunciation issues with that one, too.

I like the name Ashok. If he wants to blend in, he could use the nickname "Ash." Other favorites: Anando, Falan, Kirin, Kalyan, Rohan, and Sunil.

  • Amar - Too feminine?

    Arian - NMS

    Dilan - NMS

    Nathan - Love it!

Raj - The Big Bang Theory

Yash - This is the worst name on your list, IMO.

Yes it is!  Wow nice.  Where did you get married?  We were married in Chicago, IL!

  • Great suggestions!  Druv sounds like a kid i'd want to keep my future daughter away from!  :-)
  • I went to school with a Rajit we called Raj, so that's my favorite of those names

My other Indian (male) friends were/are:

Anil (although this one is ripe for teasing and I would veer away from.  I can't remember anyone ever making fun of Anil, but I can see it happening)

    Samir

    All of this!

  • Amar - Nice!

Arian - really bad. Reminds me of white supremacy and the Aryan Nation

Dilan - ok (looks like a misspelled Dylan even though it's a legit name)

Nathan - Like! Love the association in your culture

Raj - Nice! Reminds me of the guy on The Big Bang Theory

    Yash - Not feeling it.

    Rishi

    Anish

Vinesh, Vinay, Vinat (with nickname Vin or Vinny)

  • Another suggestion...  One of my college friends who was Indian was named "Saji"  He was a pretty cool guy. I always liked his name and we never had trouble pronouncing his name.
  • I like Amar and Raj best from your list. Two name that you didn't mention that I like are Jai and Ravi.
  • My favorite is Amar! I also like Raj.

Amar is nice. I also like PP's suggestion of Vik/Vikrim.

This, and I like Raj too.

I would NOT use Arian or Yash.

  • I like Raj. A friend recently named her son Manaav which I think is very cool. One of DH's friends is name Arjuna Are who na and people call him Arj.
    I also like Samir.
  • i like amar and raj!

  • I like Amar best. I like Raj too but it seems more like a NN to me than a stand alone name. Short for Raju or Rajesh.

I agree with everyone else that Arian is bad in America. Dilan will perpetually have spelling problems.

Yash sounds like someone trying to say 'yes' with a speech impediment. But maybe I'm not pronouncing it correctly in my head.

Basically verbatim what I was going to say.

I like the top two names a lot. Another Indian name I like that I think translates well is Kiran.

I used to work with a guy named Amit and I like that name too.  I have another co-worker named Kiran and I really really like this name when it's pronounced correctly but most of the idiots I work with call the poor guy "Karen".
