not baby related - nice towns with direct trains to nyc?

Hi all,

Sorry if this is not the place - But curious if anyone could share / recommend some nice town that are fairly close to NYC with direct train access? My hubby loves Westfield, but I'm really looking for something that is direct - and a fairly quick / easy train ride - into the city. Thanks in advance!!

ETA: if you could also add any specifics about:

-How long it takes to get into city?
-How are school districts?
-Any other details - like price of homes in area, if there's a downtown, etc.

THANKS!!

  • I know Chatham has a train station - not sure if it's direct but it's a great town with great school districts  There is a downtown main street with a lot of things on it. Homes are expensive though.

Edison is an ok town, House prices range so you can definitely find something.  I don't think there is a downtown but route 1 goes through it and it has everything.  You can take the Metropark station and it take about 20 minutes to get to newark penn so probably 30-45 minutes to the city depending on if you take a local or not.

That's all I can think of at the moment.  GL

  • I live in Cranford. The train doesnt go direct to NYC (you have to change in Newark) its a 40 minutes ride.  You can drive 10 minutes to Linden which does go direct to NYC. There is also a bus line that goes direct to Port Authority.  Cranford has a great downtown area and is alittle more affordable than its neighbor Westfield that has a great downtown area as well.  For a 3 bedroom house you are talking 400 to 500K in Cranford.  Good luck to you!

  • I live in Summit and the train is direct.  Until last week I worked full time in NYC, as does my husband.  During rush hour it took us about an hour door to door, the train ride is about 35 - 40 minutes.

Summit is a great town - I grew up here and my husband grew up in Short Hills and we knew we would return to the area to raise our children.  That being said, it's not cheap.  A nice 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath house will be no less than $550 - 600k usually.  You can find things cheaper, but definitely have to look.  The schools are excellent - I'm a graduate of Summit High and found it to be great preparation for college.  I think Summit is currently ranked 15 in the state.

Let me know if you need more info!

Thanks so much! DH is actually from Westfield and I love it around there! But I just mentally really want a direct train. I work alot and currently live really close to work, so I don't know if I can stand that extra little annoyance of switching over in Newark :) We had to stay with his parents for a month once while we were buying our current home and I hated switching over in Newark... I do think Cranford is great though, and maybe I should be more open to the train switch over!

Thank you! I think Summit will definitely make our short list! I'm hoping for a 40 minute or less train ride...

  • I live in Maplewood and really love it. Coming from Brooklyn there are a lot of Brooklyn transplants who wanted the same arts and culture but with more space and good schools. Train is about 38 minutes unless you catch the express, which is 29 minutes. Good luck with your search!
  • The South Orange train station is about 35 minutes. I live in West Orange, which is less expensive and has a free jitney to get you to the SO station. You can get 3-4 bedrooms for under 400.
  • Check out Montclair, Glen Ridge, Ridgewood, and Glen Rock.

  • i live in westfield and love it. My husband commutes to NY and it is really easy. I also know that there are direct trains from Summit, New Providence and Berkely heights, all really nice areas. If you want, my friend is a realtor, she is great. Her name is Shari Holtzman and she is with Coldwell Banker in Westfield and covers all the areas around. her email is shari.holtzman@cbmoves.com .

    You will love her!

Ridgewood is beautiful but the commute is pretty far. It is not a direct train...You have to change in Secaucus.
