Another wedding question

1.
My guilty pleasure is Say Yes To The Dress. Obviously the segments are chosen for entertainment and drama value. They show so many parents, mostly dads who throw budget concerns out the door so their "princess can be happy." Does that happen IRL? Was anyone's parent like that. Maybe I'm a bit envious of people who have indulgent dads because I can't relate.

Re: Another wedding question

• Kind of. Granted, when my parents bought my wedding dress:

1) It was a spur-of-the-moment window shopping trip on a Sunday afternoon just to see what looked good on me, and they had an open appointment window.

2) We went to David's Bridal.

The consultant asked what our budget was. I looked at my mom, who threw out what she'd budgeted in her head. It was a number that was far above the price of any dress in the store, so I was allowed to choose any dress and accessories I wanted and not worry about the price.

• I had an overall wedding budget, so I could have spent the whole amount on a dress if I wanted, then gone off to the court house. They really didn't care how much I spent on each individual piece. That said, I went shopping with my stepmom who appreciates fashion as much as I do so she was definitely encouraging of splurging on the dress.

• I went shopping with both of my parents and we found my dress at the first place we tried. I looked in their clearance section first, I wanted to respect my parent's budget. My dress was 500 bucks and I saved them a couple hundred more by doing the alterations myself.

It boggles my mind when women on Say Yes To The Dress have a dress budget of 5,000. That's more than our whole wedding cost!

• I bought a dress from my store because I got a 30 percent discount, it was pretty, and it's just a dress. No need to go scouring the earth as though you're looking for holy relics. I then got my favorite seamstress to alter the sh!t out of it so it wouldn't be the same dress I'd sold to a million other brides.

Speaking of that show, I'm so baffled by their Pnina obsession. Looks like Bavarian hooker gear to me, but whatever.

THANK YOU!!! I despise Pnina Tornai. I don't understand the see through bodices with the boning exposed. They look like something the 16 year old brides would wear on that Irish gypsy show.

. I also don't get the Pnina obsession. Not only ugly but 20,000 ugly.

• I've never seen the show, I get irritated watching shows like that. I bought my own wedding dress. It was $600 from Davids Bridal. My mom would have gladly paid more for one, but it would have been part of the total wedding budget which was $10,000 and I had been engaged once before and she bought the dress then. I figured I already made my parents spend money on one dress, why make them pay for another? They were pretty strict on sticking to the budget too, so I had to think about what was really the most important to me.
• Uh no. My dad is definitely not like that. We grew up with a very grounded view on money.

I had a nice dress for sure but it was nothing over the top. And I didn't want that.

• I've never seen this show, so I had to Google Pnina. Um, ew. That is the exact opposite of my style, but I guess I'm not the princess type.
• Not mine. DH & I mostly paid for our wedding ourselves. My parents helped with the flowers. DH parents help with the rehearsal.
• We paid for our wedding, and my dress was 80 and EXACTLY what I wanted. I would have spent more for this dress.

Anywho, I don't think my dad would have done that for a dress.

• My dad would not be like with me but I went with my mom and I spent a decent amount but nothing major.

I will say though my youngest sister will probably be one of those girls! She gets whatever she wants.
I also do not get the pnina obsession I'd rather have a Vera!

• My dad gave me a set amount for my wedding and said "spend it wisely", so technically he didn't give me a budget. I spent almost half on my dress. [He gave me 2k]

• We paid for everything on our own... my dress included = Drama free. :)

• My dad claims shopping makes him break out. So I wouldn't take him with me. I picked out my dress years before getting married, it was the only one I tried on even. And We bought it ourselves. So that did not happen to me. BUT I am a total Daddy's girl.

• If my dad liked the guy, and agreed with my marriage, he'd most likely pay for a pretty expensive dress if I wanted it. I'm not one of those bridezilla brats, though.

SYTTD is my guilty pleasure, too!

• My parents did pay for my dress, but my Mom, sister and good friend were with me. I would have never thought to bring my Dad.

I love SYTTD. Friday night is Brides night at my house.

Heck no, not my Dad. He's very smart with money and would never splurge as much as those dads seem to. I am not a Daddy's girl...he is not an emotional, affectionate person and has never referred to me as a "princess" or anything similar, but we still have a special bond and a great relationship. I, too, am a little jealous when those dads say things like they'll pay any amount as long as their daughter is happy.

Almost exactly this, except I don't know if I would say we have a "special bond" or a "great relationship." I mean, we have a fine relationship, but it's very practical and matter-of-fact. He consented to giving me the same total wedding budget as my sister had (who had gotten married 5 years earlier when my mom was still alive & I doubt dad knew what mom was spending on stuff then). He wasn't thrilled about that much money, but I guess he figured it was fair. Other than that he had zero to do with wedding planning. I got a $400 dress and came in 20% under the total budget, so that probably made him happy :).

• No...

my mom set a budget for me (which was very generous to me). We didn't tell my dad because he would have thought it was insane (even though my dress was under $1000 with everything).

• DH and I set our budget for everything under the assumption that we would be paying for everything and if our parents offered any help along the way that was just a bonus.

My mom asked what I had budgeted for my dress and thought it was a reasonable amount so she said she would like to buy my dress for me. I only tried on one dress and it was something like 250 dollars over my orginally budget. I told my mom I would pay the difference because I absolutely loved the dress. She told me not to worry about it she had it covered. Although I imagine had it been significantly more than my orginal budget she would have had me cover the difference if I really wanted the dress.

I agree. I remember one episode where it was an older woman who bought one. She looked ridiculous!

I am a sucker for lace wedding dresses. My dress had chantilly lace, and cost around 1100 with tax. The ones I liked that were complete lace were way over the budget I set in my head. My mother bought my dress as her gift to me and she gave me no budget. However, I thought it was crazy to spend thousands on a dress. I even thought the one I picked was too expensive, but I loved it and so did everyone else.

• I just watched an episode tonight where the groom spent over $50K on the brides two dresses - one for the ceremony and one for the reception... insane!! I paid for my own dress, so I was definitely on a budget, although our parents did help us with the reception cost.
