Ear Infection

Ok so we went for out check up on Xmas eve morning.  Dr. said ear infection but LO wasn't complaining or running a fever.  She put her on meds & we took them twice a day until gone, like 10 days.

She was fine.  Daycare called yesterday morning around 10:30 D was fussy all morning & her ear was draining.  I called the Dr & she goes tonight at 7pm.  Daycare then called back at 3pm & said she now have a temp please come get her.

Dh picked her up and I came home & he went back to work.  He is home with her today but at lunch I ran home.  Wanted to see her.  She just finished lunch so I gave her a bath... ear still oozing gross brown stuff.  I cleaned it well with a rag & got all the nasty stuff out of her hair (rocking the side pony now to keep it out of her hair, fingers x'ed) but all around her ear it is red.  The skin even behind her ear is red.

I'm super concerned.  A lady at work said that maybe her ear drum burst.  Does that happen from an infection?  Any seasoned ear infection Mom's out there?

Re: Ear Infection

  • We've had plenty of ear infections, but never a ruptured ear drum. They did warn us it could happen with an infection and to look for drainage, possibly with blood. I would call the dr ASAP and get her in as soon as you can. I'm not sure what they can/will do if it is ruptured, but my guess would be antibiotic ear drops.

  • We've had a few ear infections, but nothing like that.  I'd get her to the Dr or urgent care ASAP if it were me. I hope everything's back to normal soon!

  • I talked last week about our ear problems and asked for advice about tubes.  The pedi thinks LO has a small rupture.  You can see gunk in the ear.  His was not leaking though and does not seem to be in a lot of pain... just loses balance.  We go to the ENT on Monday.  Good luck, hope she feels better soon!

  • We had a burst drum in June. He woke up from it (he had just started the ear infection meds, so they hadn't had time to take affect). The dr said it would heal and he'd be fine. No ear drops necessary.
