Those that give Prevacid/lansoprazole

My daughter just got started on lansoprazole about a week ago after Prilosec didn't work as effectively as the doctor hoped, it helped but not completely. She was on 6mg 2xs a day, they just bumped it up to 7.5mg 2xs a day because I was not seeing any change and she was back to the way she was before she started the first medicine. I'm curious how much you give your child and how much they weigh. I really don't know much about this medication, but I'm assuming they started us on the low end of the dosage spectrum. Am I right?

  • My daughter gets 1 ml twice daily.  This was started when she was about 3 wks old because she had SEVERE reflux.  We were told that this was pretty much the max dosage.

How much medicine did they compound per mL? My daughters is 6mgs per mL.

  • My one DD takes prevacid twice a day 1.4 ml and then zantac before bed. we have been having difficulty with her reflux and when I called the nurse asked if she was constipated. I explain her bowel movements and she said that it was constipation that was causing her reflux to act up. Once we can get her constipation under control the medicine should work as it is suppose to. She said to stay away from apples, bananas, and rice cereal. To give 2oz of pear or prune juice to help her go.

Thoughts and prayers. Hanging in there I know its painful to see your LO suffering but it will get better.

  • LO has been on Prevacid Solutabs 7.5 mg 2x a day since 2 months when he was 10lbs. He is still on the same dosage and I think he is easily 17-18lbs now and it seems to be working just as well as before.

I read somewhere online (I think it was the University of Missouri medical center) that younger babies metabolize Prevacid/Prilosec very quickly and they actually give them a higher dose to keep it working. Then as their weight goes up, they metabolize slower and actually need less medicine. I'm not sure how true this is but my pedi also told me that is the max dosage and the next step would've been to is the see a GI for a swallow study.

  • We were doing prilosec compounded 2.5mg 2 times a day (1 month old to 4 months old), but we recently switched to the Prevacid solutab 15mg one time a day. DS is almost 20 lbs now.

  • Our little one is on the solu tabs. She takes 7.5mg/once a day. At her 6 mo check up last week we told the pedi we don't see any change after 4 weeks on it, but he refused to increase the dose. She weighed 15 lbs 12oz at her appt.
