Tdap vaccine?

My OB recommended yesterday that I get the Tdap vaccine at my next appointment (I'm 25 weeks now with twins - siggy not working) to help protect the babies from whooping cough.  I just saw this article today, which is basically the information he was explaining to me:

DH & I are discussing it - and I think I'll probably go ahead with it - but just thought I'd share and see if others have thoughts or have heard differently from your MW/OB/other practitioner...

Re: Tdap vaccine?

  • My OB gives it after birth.  No matter what, I'm all for tdap.  Whooping Cough has been a huge problem around here lately.  No need for baby to get that and if I can give LO some immunity to it while BF, I'm all for it.

  • TDAP is a big deal. DH got one, my son is fully vaxed, and I told grandparents if they want to visit they also need to be up to date with it. We are having horrible pertussis outbreaks in CA, and it's deadly to infants. I'm not rolling the dice with this one.

  • DH got his 3 months before DS was born and I insisted that all people who were spending more than a day with him before he was 2 months, got there shots also.

When it came to me, I got mine the day he was born and would not have done until after birth.  My philosophy on vaccines is an alternative one.  I am not in an area that there have been outbreaks and felt very comfortable waiting until after DS was born.

  • I wish I had a better memory, but my OB suggested I wait until I deliver. I can't remember the reason he said though. So I got mine as soon as I delivered. With everything else going on I didn't even notice they gave it to me.

However everyone that was going to be around my DD when she was born was told to get one. There have been to many babies sick with it lately for us to chance it.

Also, I live in Indiana but if you're going to be an immediate caregivers you local health department will give it for twelve dollars compared to the sixty dollars and up most doctor's office's charge.

  • It is recommended by the CDC that all pregnant women receive the shot in late 2nd tri or 3rd tri, so your care provider should recommend you getting one. However, I've decided to forego the shot until after delivery. The vax is a Category C, which means it is not tested on animals or humans. ( Which means there is no study on the effects on fetuses and this is the first year the vax is being recommended.) I plan to get the shot directly after delivery- it will take 2 weeks for the antibodies to be present in my milk, but after that baby will be immunized through my milk. Yes, there is a 2 week window, but I'm just not comfortable getting the shot while pg. It's just a really scary thing and a tough choice!

  • The recommendation has very recently changed from giving it post-birth to giving it while pregnant. I would follow the recommendation, especially if you are in an area  with endemic whooping cough (although in this day and age, people travel so much it's a risk everywhere).
  • Yes, you should get it.  I chose to get it right after I gave birth.

  • My midwife and my naturopath have both said they recommend it at 8months so there is time for your body to produce antibodies. This is a vaccine that is most effective for the first year. Most of the people who have been getting in in our area in this last epidemic have been previously vaccinated. You can't vaccinate a baby under 8 weeks so everyone that will be caring for or close to your child often should have their booster within the last year.

  • I would get it.

  • I got it after my second was born, but I think the recommendations were different for when to get it (it was 2010). Make sure your DH is either up-to-date or gets it too.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • My midwives recommended getting it any time after 20 weeks, so I got it on Monday at 25 weeks.

  • My doctor suggested TDAP after delivery. Which I'm kind of glad about, because honestly? The days-long pain and soreness of the TDAP was the worst part of my recovery. I just reacted really badly. I would have hated having to deal with that while pregnant and would not have been able to have the good pain killers that I needed to even sleep.
