The costs of a nanny versus a daycare center.

My husband and I are starting to do some financial planning for baby-related costs next year. (I'm about 8 weeks along.) I've been able to get a strong sense of the range we might have to pay for a daycare center (the upper end of that spectrum is shocking), but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to determine what sort of salary we might need to pay a nanny if we went that route.

Is there anyone out there who has already employed a nanny and can speak to the costs from personal experience? I don't need to tell you how expensive it is to live in New York. We're wondering if it would be possible to hire a nanny given our joint income and existing expenses.

I live in Williamsburg and the going rate seems to be $15/hr +

We are currently interviewing nannies and the going rate for full time is about 600/week in manhattan and Brooklyn. Usually includes a monthly metro card and holidays.

Hi there how many hours for 600/week? I work 12 hour days in a hospital, and I can't imagine most nannies working that long. I may be totally wrong though, as I have no basis for this assumption.

Most nannies are hourly, i would say anywhere from $15 to $20 an hour in nyc.
